Without doubt, my favorite week {1/68} of recorded Dead ! Not quite 1/20 hot, but another early lyric TOO, a much too rare Clementine, amazing NPC > BCE & sweet Spanish ! 5*****
I remember somewhere Grace saying Davis' "Sketches of Spain" was very popular, and very infulential. I never realized the obvious White Rabbit similarity. It oozes Spanish !!
I love the Archive ~ Thank you again Julian "JJ" Jools Elliott and countless others.

Gorgeous
No matter what date this was from, it's excellent. I'm a huge fan of Clementine and while is not it's strongest performance, it's always good to hear. Bobby loses his voice for Born Cross-Eyed which kind of adds to the entertainment value.

sorry guys, this is NOT a three star show...
even if this recording is tragically truncated, what IS here is just amazing, pure and simple. the other one, clementine and New potato are all excellent, and this is one of very few versions of born cross eyed available, which is also very well done. garica's playing throughout is incendiary, (try the new potato) as well as thoughtfully coltrane-like jazzy (clementine). and while i agree that clementine may not have been the greatest song the band ever wrote, to me it gels quite wonderfully as a beautiful jam vehicle. be sure to listen to the miller version instead, which i think is significantly better than this...

The GRATEFUL DEAD performed at the Eagles Auditorium in Seattle Washington on January 23,1968, but here we "see clearly" that the GRATEFUL DEAD are performing at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland Oregon on the very same day January 23, 1968.
HOW CAN THIS BE?
...It must be proof that the GRATEFUL DEAD were at two places at the same time...AMAZING!

Pieces of shows
There's a lot of evidence that there was no 1/23/68 show. Some of this is 1/22/68. The bit of Spanish Jam sounds like it is the "Space" from 1/22/68 before the cut -- there is more to it not here.
Clementine (written by Phil Lesh, inspired by John Coltrane's two-chord improves), was played only 5 times. I like the one on 1/20/68.

The Two-Chord Bounce
"Clementine" is simply an idea that never got developed into a song. The two chords allow for some interesting jamming and a change in dynamics, particularly in transitioning out of the "Cryptical" reprise. But the words are, well, not Hunter's best.
Nevertheless, virtually anything from this period is golden. With the "Other One" suite, "Dark Star," and "The Eleven" mixed in with Pigpen's R&B, the Dead created its own unique inimitable music. How many band can you really say that about with a straight face?
For me, though, the band never had a sustained period of passion and originality to match 1967-1970. True, there were some fine songs and lengthier pieces that showed what the band was capable of ("Terrapin," "Help/Slip/Franklin's," and "Eyes of the World," for example), but they never lived up to these early years.
I think Phil Lesh may have nailed it in his book when he talked about how the drugs the once helped glue their experiences together ultimately alienated the band members from one other. No matter how much Phil tries to spin things positively, the story is totally tragic.
By the way, for a better example of how to make a very good song out of a bouncy, two-chord jam, listen to the Allman Brothers' "Dreams."

What a SHOW!!
I think that every good show in the Anthem/Aoxomoxoa can be judged by the intensity of the Cryptical Envelopment. These early versions are like fire-breathing dragons. They don't invoke the pop-hippie subculture typified by this era. This set is scary psychedelic. Jerry's spittin' acid out of his guitar. The eerie Clementine and beautiful New Potato make this one of the most underrated shows of their 30 years.

I gotta say I would dl this if it were able to be....and I wish I could someday write a review w/o mentioning the thanksgiving day massacre from 05. Well may just be someday I will be able to....so blank those responsible for it. this show just sounds right on and I wish i was in the herbavore cruisin w the top down by first beach in newport with this pumpin. viva pergatory chasm. and viva la pasta too.

Clementine
"Clementine" is a pretty tune, cool-jazz 6/8 style, atmospheric. Similar to Quicksilver's "Gold and Silver" in its time signature and softly loping feel.
But in all the versions in this archive "Clementine" never quite jells into a really good song. Half the band usually plays much too busily while the other half plays tastefully and true. And it's tough to play a two-chord bounce for very long without the song becoming boring.
It's a shame. A nice tune with potential. A little gem.
