I did! Herewith are my favorite versions of Row Jimmy,
Big River, Ship of Fools, Must've Been the Roses, Sugaree, (2nd Set!!) and China Cat> Rider. And I've heard a ton of versions of all of these. The China-Rider here is what I recommend you play for anyone brand-new to the Dead and enthusiastic, or someone skeptical and unfamiliar. The jam leading up to and including the segue is incredible. If they don't "get it" after hearing that, then they just don't have a very musical mind to start with. The Charlie Miller soundboard has the complete show, and is here:

The Eyes is right on up there with the best, and this Sugaree is so fantastic I get delirious -and I'm not even that big a fan of the song. Check that- I guess I am now! It beats any I've ever heard from '77 or any other year. But I'm partial to the early-mid '70s to begin with, so that's just my personal take on it. Regardless, crank it up!

After giving this show a few more thorough listens, i feel compelled to change my rating to a five.
lots of hot little tunes are tucked away in this ... one, including great versions of Deal, Ramble On Rose, Greatest Story, and Big River - Garcia's second solo, wow! And i believe this is the Money Money featured as a bonus track on the expanded Mars Hotel?
I think now that this Eyes is one of the very best ever - everything is just exactly perfect. and like i said before, Phil's soloing is just exceptional; jerry even joins in during the second one leading a gorgeous, wonderfully jazzy duet between them. the way they intertwine during the minor key passages is just awesome. i don't believe there are many better examples of this...

hyperboy i'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree w/ you on one point; while this isn't one of the best shows of the year (and 2/24 certainly is) i think this China Cat is much better. 2/24 does have a gorgeous ujb-like jam, but i think that jam as a whole is a bit ragged. you can tell the one here is much tighter and more rehearsed (maybe SINCE '69! lol)

goes D/A/Bminor/A, while Feelin' Groovy descends from D and does not go up to the B minor. It does sound a lot like Feelin' Groovy but technically it is not from the chords they play and the chords on Feelin' Groovy. Just a techinical note for all you guitar players.

Fault jam, etc. It's all about the segues, which are my favorite!!! Plus, there's a Money Money, and I love that song. My only complaint is that the first set is a little light prior to the Playin'. This is to me a 4.5 star show. In some years, I'd round this up to a 5, but in this strong year, I have to give it a 4.

started to bother me that the first few seconds were missing from the begining of the track. I attributed this to my having only got the China Doll track and thusly the track cut from Eyes>China must have been to blame, so I finally got around to grabbing the Eyes and threw 'em both in winamp but unfortunately the missing begining of China Doll is not in fact at the very end of Eyes, it's just not there at all so I agree with the comment Chris Barry made in 2004 about the Eyes>China Doll cut.
It's tough because you miss the first few lines, both verbal and orchestral, from China Doll after a great segue out of Eyes. The missing data seems to be at the beginning of China Doll as distinct from the end of Eyes, but that's just where they made the cut for individual tracks, either way it's just not there, beggars and choosers though.
Well, this show was within one month of my birth day in my birth year so I'm partial to the shows within this 6 month window anyways just get kinda excited when i see the date before listening.
Wish we could still get .shn of all the sound boards without reverse engineering it etc etc ad nausea ad infinitum.

between China>Rider since you could try for hours. Though, I think that during the period when they played this you couldn't ask for a better version. So, here is my opinion even though it probably doesn't matter to anyone else. I think that we should stick to calling this just whatever the hell you want to call it. I think if you call it something, we'll always no what your talking about.

is completely unrelated to this segue jam. If you want a MLB jam, listen to 10/17/74 - Spanish Jam > MLB jam.
The UJB-like segue from China>Rider made its debut in a spring 1973 show (5/26/73 is really cool)...and survived through the 5 night Winterland run in 10/74. Although it is in a totally different key than UJB, it has that sort of groove to it. Anyway, this one is just OK. IMO, the best ever UJB-like segue jam is 2/24/74 Winterland! Damn! Jerry's tone is just crystal clear and in your face...he really nails it with a special touch this night! The one on the bonus disc from the movie does not touch 2/24/74.
This show is good...but it does not touch 2/24/74, 5/19/74, 6/18/74, 10/74 Winterland run (especially 10/19/74), or any show from Nov-Dec 73!

Otherwise the show is excellent, but lacks some of the crazier second set jams that mark the very best shows from this summer.

While the show does have good energy, and the China>Rider is well-played, there is constant backround static throughout. Also, the sound is maxed out

on many of the tunes, with the higher notes becoming distorted. Even during the fine China>Rider, Garcia's guitar and voice both distort at the high end. On one of the other reviews, Ox Fall Down raves about the UJB in the middle of China Cat. I think maybe he's taken a few too many trips. I don't here any UJB anywhere in this tune. With so many crisper shows from this time period, such as the one three nights earlier at The Adams Field House, why bother? Performance is definitely 5 stars, but poor quality sound drops it down to 3.
One more thing... No one mentions that the second set jam is cut. The transition from Eyes > China Doll fades out and then the first lines of China Doll are missing. I suggest getting the China>Rider and the Sugaree, and leave the rest.

What is it about May? 5/70, 5/72, 5/74 and 5/77? Maybe it's the spring buds! This show could easily be a top ten, were it not for so many other 1974 greats.

Maybe one of the crispiest, best sounding Wall shows of 74, and the playing is just "Dead on". Every song skillfully executed. The China Cat -well it's as if they've been rehearsing this song since 1969 just so they could play it NOW. I dare you to find a better 1970's China Rider! Long and well jammed with energy to spare. And if you like Mars Hotel - this is your show! Loose Lucy, US Blues, Money Money, Ship of Fools and China Doll all appear. Add Unbroken Chain and Scarlet and you'd have the whole album! Though not as jam intensive as 1974 shows with Dark Stars or Other Ones, the Playin is VERY decent, and the Nobody's Fault Jam into Eyes may be the best of the year. A good show to take in your car. Also a rare Dire Wolf from Jerry! Get this one soon folks and crank it up on a good system. It sparkles.

i agree with the comments below. though i love the intro to the providence version the following month, this is my all-time favorite china>rider.

phil is a monster on it! jerry, bobby and billy are crisp. phil's back up vocals add an old-days quality. after having worn out an old dead hour cassette version, i've sought out every digital disc copy i could find. sound quality here rates with the gdlive version. get it.

Dupree's?) and a fine '74 set list. But THE Reason you really have to have this one is the China Cat > Rider. In the year of the Uncle John's Mind Left His Body jams between the two, this is the top of the heap, a stunning crescendo in the key of joy. Dig it, and dig it very soon.
