Solid show that unfortunately was stuck in between two of the better shows of 91. The pre-drums is solid but shorter than the post drums! Jack Straw to open set 2 was a nice surprise over the expected Sunday Samson. I like the Stagger Lee, Memphis Blues and Let it Grow from Set 1 and Box was cool as the encore. I remember people jumping over that wall during Bertha and remarking that it was a much greater fall to the field then say RFK. Sorry to hear that guy broke his ankle below, but at least he made it through the show.

Not near the masterpiece that of course follows on 6/17. Yes, yes, this show is good, but by June '91 standards it's probably near the bottom of the heap. Sure, you get a Candyman in the first set, as well as a Stagger Lee and Let It Grow (always love Horsby and Co. on this tune). For a better version of the latter, though, check out the next one from Soldier Field on 6/22. At any rate, lots have already mentioned it, so I'll simply add to the chorus: highlight comes in the pre-drums slot, which features the opener Jack Straw->Crazy Fingers->China-Rider. But that accounts for only about 30 minutes. I also dig the second half of space into the Black Peter. Nice little coda there, too. At any rate, dare I say, you can probably skip this one and head straight for 6/17...and not even look back.

Okay, a Picasso Moon opener is usually a bad omen. But the rest of this show has some great tunes and is well played. Lead on Bertha is crisp. Even Rooster is hot. Always a fan of Stagger Lee. I could go on, but instead will simply say that this is a solid show albeit not as fantabulous as the next night. Concerning prior comments on how humans abuse their planet and the flora and fauna..... it's a tragedy that will never end. Why? Because the world changes but people don't. #BeKind #AINTNOTIMETOHATE

Although this is a music site for a band beyond description, there are bigger things happening and they always knew that. This is not to be preachy and it is probably the only place on this site where such a topic is brought up, but the boys gave the message at this show for a reason. The images were brutal and certainly not what a lot of acid eyed people wanted to see. But it is reality. That was 1991. 24 years later not much has changed. Seal hunts continue. Elephants are slaughtered at a rate of 1 every 15 minutes, sometimes a family of 80 are gunned down. We forget we live in the natural world because we have allowed ourselves to be removed from it. Species are rapidly heading toward extinction. 3 rhino species in a matter of a decade, less than 100 mongolian bears left, less than 50 asiatic cheetah. Let's remember that there is a world beyond our daily encounters that is disappearing quicker than you may know. Search "palm oil deforestation" you won't like what you see, maybe you will see the photo of the charred orangutan clutching its child. This was the message the boys were trying to bring out that night. Bobby's now wife is an environmental activist.
And now back to the music. DSO played this show last night and it jogged my memory of Giants stadium and how there were still some pieces of gems played for us now and then. I used to dislike the overdone Hell in a Bucket opener, but damn I would take that over Picasso Moon! Now it does not burn my ears quite so bad, but there is no thrill in hearing it. But, Candyman, Black Peter, Box of Rain, Jack Straw, China>Rider and Let it Grow in one night was good. Giants stadium shows are mostly a blur to me. The post drums jams were interesting and while the show has its ups and downs, the ups are definitely worth checking out.

I was at this show and just about every other one that summer. All the shows were amazing*** For those of you complaining about the graphic environmental images, maybe you need a Reality check and take notice of how bad things were(and are and getting worse!)and the Boy's had the crazy notion that Maybe a few of the the 60,000 plus fan's would feel the Pain of those animals and forests and DO something about it!!! I guess it was wishful thinking. I for one cried me eyes out and began my journey into environmental awareness. Thank You GD for opening my EYES and Heart.

I wasn't at this show, but I think all the environmental-awareness imagery may have been in the "save the rainforests" theme. These 2 shows were broadcast on ABC for "In Concert '91" and they focused a lot on that stuff in the TV version. Not to turn a blind eye, but I wouldn't want to see that awful stuff during a show! High energy show, like a lot from summer '91.

If you listen REALLY carefully, you can hear (right before Bertha) me breaking my right foot as I ill-advisedly jumped down to field level, leaving my girlfriend and my good sense behind. :) And then I had to run on my broken foot to escape security.
Now, on to the show itself. The band does sound a bit out of sync. I finally hooked up with my 2 friends who had also jumped (one with a sprained ankle, so injuries must have been common) during Stuck Inside of Mobile. I remember thinking (as I danced) "Man, my foot hurts." Stagger Lee was more like it and I always loved Let it Grow. At the set break, I took stock of my rapidly swelling and blackening foot and decided that it was indeed broken. Then the boys came back on and opened with an astounding Jack Straw that literally lifted me up, back on my feet, back to dancing. Crazy Fingers was a MOST welcome early second set surprise, and then we were treated to the best (maybe) China/Rider I ever saw. The energy level was not sustained throughout the set though, and the generic Stones>NFA ender that we had all heard so many times before had me sitting back down (finally). As Box of Rain washed over the crowd, I was limping through the tunnels back to our truck.
Other memories of this show: We all bought fake tickets (there was a huge counterfeiter bust that day) and somehow I managed to get in with mine! I also lost a half z of heady nugs somewhere inside Giants, to whoever found it, you're welcome. :) Finally, I remember the clubbed seals on the screen too. It just seemed to fit with the whole broken foot thing, so I didn't really pay it any mind. I also remember that on the big screen, Jerry looked like Bozo the clown when his hair was getting blown back, which was most of the night.
A pretty decent show with some definite highlights.

Does anyone remember seeing an image of Brent Mydland below the video monitors or on them. This was my first show after Brent died and my friend and I kept seeing an image of Brent. Also I remember seeing the seals and trash with smokestacks on the video monitors. Decent show nice box of rain.

There is no question about it that the next night blew this show away by a mile. But I was at both these shows, and at the time you simply did not know that the magic of 6-17-91 was on the horizon.
And even if the show was uneven, the pre-drums of set II showcases the Dead at their best. The interaction between Jerry and Bruce in Jack Straw is burned in my memory. I'd love to see a video of it.
Also check out the Jam coming out of Black Peter before Throwing Stones. It's a powerful segment which foreshadows the labyrinth of Drak Stars to come the following night.

I was a senior in High School friend got me a ticket, I lived about 40 minutes from the Stadium. It was the first time I drank as well. I got totaly wasted and spent the whole show passed out. I remember waking up during the end of Not Fade Away covered in puke, there was a 5 seat radius of empty seets around me, I wonder why. I didnt really start listening to the music until several months later and was hooked. I spent the next 4 years seeing as many shows as I could. Probably close to 25 a year. I never got that drunk before a show again.

There's always a better show folks.
Stagger Lee is outrageous. Jerry's just downright frothy. Rest of the show is quality. Not the 17th, but pretty damn good.
I ate rotten corn cooked on a bus's manifold and puked my mind out. I had an AP Psychology exam the next day. I passed.
I recall the seal clubbing. Far out.
Listen and DL. Good stuff.

having fallen in love with night 2 I had to check out its' little brother, especially after reading the stuff about seal clubbing. What is that about?????
Not even close to night 2. First set is pretty bad, picasso Moon sounds like jerry still tuning up and nobody in sync in LRR. first half of the second set is solid. This show can't measure the genius to follow the next night.

Parked newt to two guys fromAZ, with the one's baby and books of "critters." They traded a page to the some boys from Mass. for a 1/2 z. I voluntered to test them, but they said they were going to drop themselves. A few minutes later the guy from AZ handed me 3. I said, "how many should I take." He said, " take 1 and save 2, take 2 and save 1 or take all 3." I dropped all 3. I went in to the show early and watched the stadium fill with folks, slowly but surely. I was in section 320, two rows from the top. During either Little Feat or the Deads 1st set( it was light out yet) Spike Lee came strolling up the aisle with his camera crew. They were filming a commercial for jeans, I believe it was for Lee. In the commercial, there is a pan shot from the top of the stadium. Anyone remember this commercial or seeing Spike. I remember another shot of a girl spinning on the floor in it.
The first set was pretty much a blurr or should I say trails etc. I do remember the pre-drums was nice and a good black peter. The sound quality of this show sounds pretty decent, considering it was Giants. I only streamed it though.

I don't remember any clubbings but I do remember images of oil-covered seals, freeze-framed in what looked to be a cry of agony. Also, many scenes of smokestacks, pollution, trash, etc(movies during Space). Quite disturbing, considering the mental state, but not as much as the scene I also witnessed the night before. I remember the show being OK but I did make a great friend who also sat next to me the following evening.

To the previous writer, I was at this show as well and I do remember those images of the seals being clubbed and it was downright STRANGE...for those not there imagine seals lined up one by one in a "pinkfloyde-wall" type of oddness and a hand with a lopping tool coninually smacking the seals over head. But not until now that I read your post. I never forget things like that and you jogged my memory. That was soooooooo trippy and I was right there with ya...
This show was better in person. Recordings from giants stadium always sound a little odd in my book.
The sound here is mixed funny in that its too vocal. The guitar rifts sound distant, they are not "there" like you want in a sbd copy. I give this 3 stars. Jerry does take off on a nice set of "heavy metal esque" licks in jack straw but if it sounds like the guitar is distant then it really can't be ranked too high.
I still remember jerry wearing a lavendar T-shirt that night up on the bi screen...then images of those seals...I came down with mononeucleosis the next day out of nowhere and missed teh following night's show...and the rest of the tour.
Thanks a lot for the upload iut was a great listen just not something i will record.

Wish I could give this one two-and-a-half stars. It was a blast to be there, but it doesn't hold up on tape. Lots of energy here, just not much cohesion. Drumz > Space is a pleasant trip and I never say no to Crazy Fingers. Unfortuantely, it's rare when the band members click into gear with one another.
