I've heard so many great audience recordings from Alpine Valley that it makes me believe that it was really great acoustically. Don't even need boards.

Decent performance, good enough for the time.....but just when you think it's time to write off this show, suddenly comes the most impassioned, blistering, unforgettable version of DEAR MR. FANTASY the band ever played....!!
Average show raised from 2 to 4 stars simply on the strength of this STUPENDOUS version of DMFantasy...!!

On my copy, JS/BRR Blues is one file and is definitely a SB recording. I must have downloaded and burned it when SBs were still available. Don't despair, the AUD sounds better.

A good solid Dead show but Jack Straw is missing. Other than that great show, sound is a little off, but thats the beauty of bootlegs.

My first time at Alpine - really fun show - I seem to recall the show started earlier than what was printed on the Tix - a lot of us got caught going thru the turnstyles when the show started and rather than chaos the Iko just got us all groov'in. I also remember everybody in my section went nuts before Mr Fantasy because we thought for sure it going to be St Stephen - the intro sounds very similar to the slow, lazy way they played St Stephen in the late 70's. But Mr F was the hit of the night, even though Jerry vocals were pretty bad. Phil's Doin'it in the Road was a blast. I also remember there were like 2 solid hrs of fireworks after the show - groooovy.

I have major hearing problems. It’s called tinnitus and for those of you who don’t know it is a constant ringing in your ears. Therefore, it is hard for me to find audience shows that are of good enough quality for me to listen to without doing further damage to my ears by having to turn up the volume. I am not saying anything about these shows except that as a person with major hearing lose, these are some of the shows that I have on my I-Pod. I am not giving any of these shows a review. I can always find something good in every show…...as long as I can hear it!!!!Here is my list, by date, for today 9/19/08;

I remember this one. I took a non-Deadhead date with me and we sat about 4th row on the right side. Right in front of the speakers. I remember this dude in between sets that was standing in the isle just twirling around and he was clicking his fingers like he had finger cymbels but there wasn't any cymbels. He was tripping HEAVILY and he wouldn't stop. Eventually security grabbed him and took him off. Anyway, I clearly remember the Bird Song - Let it Grow as being really rockin.
And Lesh inchin up to Bobby's mike for Do It in the Road. That blew my mind!
My date was cute and all but she missed the bus all together.

Oh yeah, I've seen tapes appropriately notated with the song title "Around & Abort." Like a batter frozen in the box, watching a fast ball fly right by him down the middle of the strike zone, Bobby just couldn't seem to pull the trigger on that tune. Thank God that Sugar Magnolia was there to bail 'em all out.

This was my second Dead show, after seeing the last, my first, a year before in 83 at 16. Now 17, I was ready. Holy cow, can you say BOINKNESS. Check out the Aiko to open, they go crazy at the end, with Brent nearly losing his voice. Then Jack straw, sweet. Then Big R&R, nice! Finally Bobby, a mean rooster. Candyman is sweet too, with a perfect uncle/mexicali to swing things open. Then the epics in a row to close the first set; Bird Song>Let it Grow. I had a killler Tape of this show and the Bird Song - Let it Grow took up almostthe of side B, or thereabouts. It really is sick, check it out, the whole set/show.
Second set showed a sweet moon and we were ready for a rocking China/Rider, Jerry rallies...does a great Ship of Fools (best ever, for me, and love Brent's back-up vocals), to be followed by Woman. Drums goes from rocking to spacey/12 min, into space/6 min, and then the KILLER Dear Mr. Fantasy out of space. Listen to the transition, it's sweet. Jerry and Brent trading lines. Fantasy had only been played once or so, at Red Rocks 6/84 I think....>>>into a RIPPING Other One/Phil Bombs all over/Jerry lost in melodies, winding down into a beautiful Black Peter...and then...stumbled into Do It In the Road (who would've figured), with Phil and Brent SRCREAMING, too funny...but not half as funny as when Jerry started going into Around and Around after, only to stop, almost walk off the stage...as the band winds into Sugar Mag..and it ripped to close the set. Touch Encore, and you can bet I had never heard Touch before back in 84. 84-85 rocked, I'd love to see some Dicks Picks from then...Thanks for alllowing the memories to live, and check out the second set of the following night, 7/7/84, when they revive lovelight since 81, played Terrapin out of space, a great Playing and jam into...China Doll...Brokedown Encore...a great time to camp in the parking lot...

This show is really solid from start to finish. The version of Let It Grow is the best I've ever heard- seriously! The Birdsong, Let It Grow combo is stellar. The Second Set is terrific too: a great version of The Other One. I would download this show in it's entirety but it's worth it just for the Let It Grow.

This is solid show in both sets. Most notably, the Bird Song in set 1 is really tight. In set 2, I am real partial to the end of space into the Fantasy. This is real nice. I agree with the previous poster about the AUD source, but will take high quality AUDs from '83 and '84 over SBDs any day as these boards sound almost muffled at times especially as compared to anything from '87 until the end of the painful to listen years of the mid '90s.

This is as well played as you will get for that year or for the 80's. First set is tight and well played and second set is for the record books. Never made it to Alpine Valley in my 70 or so shows - big regret. Sennheisers give it that tinny sound with little low end compared to the Nak shotguns this is my only gripe - Phil's a bit muted.

Dito for me, only 5 years later. I was to young in 84. In my review of Alpine 89 I said similar thing, some of my best times and memories I'll take to the grave. The scene here in summer of 84 must of been ridiculios. In spite of some opinion about the Dead in 84 and Jerry's habbit, I always thought they were on fire.
Always liked Brents choice of trippy keyboarding around this period. I remember when I was younger tripping with friends in a park playin' a little frisbe or whatever and listening to some of those 83-84 tapes the lingering sounds Brent was using, would always trip me out. Talk about seeing sound. Alot of this in 84. Noticed on Candyman just now. if you want to hear more I use really trip on and smoke alot alot of killer bud to the Hult 84 shows. Wierd stuff but top notch in my book.

After 5 years of listening to bootlegs, my Mom finally let me head out to see my 1st Dead Show. What a way to begin, especially with another 50+ to follow. If you never made it to Alpine, well, you missed an incredible experience regardless if the guys were on or not. I was 17 and it is a memory I will take to my grave.

This was always one of my favorite shows that I saw, and it was my 2nd. after 150 more, it is stil one of the inspired nights I remember, a warm summer evening at Alpine. First set is fun with lots of great tunes to start and end the set. Post Space is just out of hand, from the monster Fantasy to the smoking Other One, complete with the bonus do it in the road and mistake round and round. A great show, followed by another the next night!

Jerry takes over from Brent mid Fantasy on vocals and the on guitar with an amazing extended mind massaging lead to never end Fantasy.
