Subject: Sweet AUD from Atlanta's Fox Theater
Subject: Sweet AUD from Atlanta's Fox Theater
This is a sweet AUD, clear with nice depth - as good of an AUD as I find on LMA. Thank you to those who worked to preserve it.
The Dead sound great in theaters, and they seem to be loving the acoustics at The Fox, which may explain some of the dynamic, nuanced playing at this show. This is a very consistent, even-keeled performance - nobody is mailing it in here - so, together with this sweet-sounding AUD, it's an easy 5-star rating for me.
I kinda thought they sound really rested on this recording, and sure enough, they appear to have had 10 days off before heading East to South Florida to start a run up the East Coast a few nights before these two Atlanta shows (10/28, 10/29). They didn't get to Florida often, so I bet those shows had some heat - I'll have to listen to them. One of the wildest AUD's I've heard is 11/29/1980 from Alligator Alley Gymnasium at University of Florida. The crowd is going nuts the whole time, like an NYC show. 11/26/1980 from Pembroke Pines, FL during that run was actually one of the first tapes I ever had on cassette, given to me by a former GF, and it smokes. That tape may have been my introduction to what The Dead are really all about live.
I believe I heard a witch cackle audibly at 0:23 into Cassidy, and balloons popping at random throughout the show. Hey, Halloween was a few days away, so there were probably a few little Merry Pranksters running around causing mischief.
The tune Kansas City is a rarity, which Brent really gets cooking with his work on the keys - it turns into a honky-tonk rave-up, Dead-style. I can't put into words to the way the guys handle this Peggy-O. I love how the rhythm section coaxes Brother Esau from the ether; Billy and Mickey compliment each other so well at times. Scarlet appears here without its sidekick, Fire on the Mountain, but they manage to slip out of it into a slightly uptempo Touch of Grey. The Terrapin>Drums/Space suite here is wicked - I'm just saying. It's close to a half hour of music.
PS - Caution: there are Phil Bombs.

This is the best source for this show. Incredible AUD quality. Bobby's playing is especially hot. Jerry is in fine form.

I loved this show! So much fun at the Fabulous Fox! Plush velvet and washroom attendants.
Still, it's from 1985 and the music is not very compelling today...

This show backs up my heartfelt sentiment: God, I love '85! The whole year just built upon itself as the band built to a monster, ongoing groove. I really think Garcia was waking up to the possibility of improving his life, and it shows. Packed with emotion and intense playing.

10/29/85 deservedly gets praise heaped upon it but this night is a beautiful lead-in.
real nice Terrapin...
a fine representation of 1985 Dead when they were hitting on all of the proverbial cylinders.

I'm in love with this show, im surprised it has never been suggested to me before. It is a nice Easu, as is Scarlet>Touch. There is a beautiful sorrow in Jerry's voice, and really nice flowing jamming (remenicent of the 70's). One of those AUD recordings that i prefer to SBD.

Best Esau ever? Flawless version of a cool, overlooked song (well, OK, Bobby did botch the lyrics once or twice, but that's part of Bobby's charm, right?). Yep, the Scarlet/Touch is outrageously good. Nice quality to the sound.

I was amazed that I sent down to the Fox box office and got 20th row seats this night and 10th the next. What a venue! The first thing you see is the big bar and wait staff in tuxes. Even the ushers were real nice. The ambiance was fantastic. Beautiful arcitecture. Even the exit signs had little cury-cues. The music was great. It had a real thick, powerful feel to it. It was interesting to hear the Scarlet into Touch of Grey. The banners were real impressive. Drums were really good too. It was weird leaving the show with hurricane Gloria blowing through. It seemed to be touring with the Dead too and followed us up at least to Richmond. It was a memorable experience trying to pitch a tent in the storm and even more of an experience trying to get some sleep. Especially after this fine show and anticipating the following night.

Another corrupted file? I'll download another show real quick to see if my comp is screwing me over. At 87.5%, just another minute...O.k, it's officially not me. I'ne done 10 different shows already this morning with no trouble and now I've just done 85/04/27, also with no glitches. So, I think that the 28/10/85 is mucked up. Too bad too because I really wanted it.
Now it works-go figure!!!!

This was only my second Dead show, and it still ranks as one of my favorites. The band was really on (they really loved Atlanta), and there is no place like the Fox Theatre to see any band, much less the Dead. As the second set began people had broken open glow-sticks and sprayed the crowd with neon green dots. The transition in Scarlet>Touch is increadible. At the change from "I will survive" to "We will survive" a banner as high and wide as the stage featuring the Twenty Years So Far minuteman unfurled behind the band. It still gives me goosebumps when I hear the crowd go wild on the tape. I highly recommend this show.
