It's gotta be a decade since I've listen to 90's Dead. Not a whole lotta good shows to pick from. However....this is truly an exception. Love the bovine
...
samples in drums.
The 80's are by far my fav decade and I've been listening to that decade for about a decade now. This is the first show w/o Brent Mydland that I've listened to in a LONG ASS time. I completely forgot about Welnick. Wait is this Hornsby? Or is it them together? Odd time for The Dead, but fantastic show no doubt. Even the drums and space. Mooooo

Subject: Had to Go
When I heard the boys were going to Europe I knew I had to be there. None of my friends were able to make the trek so I went alone and made new friends.
...
After the MSG run I was looking for more of those extended pre-drum jams which didn't happen. What we did get(at least in Paris) was some really tight, well executed show. I was right in front of Jerry the second night and the dynamic and excitement between him and Bruce was palpable. My favorite version of Victim, the meltdown ending is as psychedelic as anything from the early 70's. There are great shows and dogs all throughout their 3 decades. Anyone who gets down on the 80's or 90's is just being elitist or not really listening. There are plenty of blah shows from 78 too. As far as bashing the French well, people are people and I don't see where that sort of talk has a place in this forum. BTW, I went on to London which was fun but the band energy was definitely not as high.

Subject: Europe 90!!
Subject: Europe 90!!
It's hard to say which run is stronger in 1990, the MSG run in September, or this following run through Europe in October.
With all due respect to Brent, ... it's a testament to how much spirit the Dead had to manage to pull together so soon after the tragic loss and deliver what is possibly some of the best runs of their later period.
It's obvious that the infusion of Hornsby into the band inspired Jerry to step up to the plate again and take on the Lion's mantle of leading the band - at least for a while. And it's also obvious that to undertake a major Europe tour so soon after a personnel transition speaks volumes about how much confidence the band had in their ability to regroup and perform high quality shows.
And nowhere is this more true than this show. Definitely one of the best shows from the tour. The first set really gets going with a slow, slippery Candyman - fine vocals from Jerry here, as well as everyone else. Ditto the Box of Rain - who says Phil can't sing? A powerful version of a crowd favorite gets the crowd fired up. Then - they light the fuse with Maggie's Farm. This song is right up Bruce's alley, and he and Jerry build the song to a peak of energy that will make you get up and dance. Listen to Vince's great Dylan impression!!!
And while you may have reservations about the Dead doing a Hornsby song, "Stander" is SOOO Garcia/Hunter style that it fits in seamlessly here, not to mention it smokes! All in all, a great setlist for Set One. I'm happy.
Victim kicks off with some mind-warping midi effects, a sign that this set will be of a different dimension entirely. Surprise - a reverse Estimated>Eyes, with Jerry peeling off lines right and left. The Bar>Space segment is, well, pretty weird, even for this period. Everything from going through black holes, to Amazon jungle drums to bullfrogs croaking. Really a treat for the senses. Save a nug, or two for this part!!
The Other One is everything it should be - Jerry riding a blazing comet of fury and sound, not to mention the drummer's work here. The Second Set just keep getting better, what can I say. Then they manage to come back for a spine-chilling Heaven's Door, with Garcia just bringing tears to your eyes his singing is so strong.
Not a weak moment in this show friends! A must have for this tour, and for 1990 as well.
cheers,
Dr. Flashback :-)

Top couple of shows from Europe 90.
Regarding the Victim- knarly is the word.
Regarding the show- If your thing is to have Phil Pharting in your Phace ... for an entire show, this one will do the trick.

I always shied away from 90's Dead-figured just some old guys hangin around for the fame and "the girls in the short skirts" and tryin to make some more
...
$$$ and they wouldn't be half the band they once were. First time ever hearing "Stander" for me, and thats magical just as shows @ The Matrix with Garrceeah & His Friends were in '68. A great band is a GRATE band at any age especially when not always playing 'songs' as most of us know them to be--songs that aren't always the same, that go in a zillion directions at once and end up back where they started, twenty minutes or so later. SynCHRONICity.....
Never knew the ?accordian? and the Dead went together so well...Encore of 'Knockin' is just unreal. Fabulous but kinda sad when you look at and hear the big picture.
France doesn't deserve this????? Are you kidding? The WORLD deserves and NEEDS this and maybe you saw some shows but i'm not sure you heard em.....
Anyway, we have 4 decades of Dead material at our 'crazy finger'tips thanks to Archive so load up on your favs but check it all out-you may be happy you did and you may just find a new fav in there along the way!!!!

These shows in the Fall of 1990 are so refreshing. Bruce's piano, the novel song selections, aggressive playing by all and outstanding sound quality make
...
them must haves.
This show in particular is a great one for the uninitiated who need a good entre into 90's Dead. The playing is tight, highlighting all that shines in the songs as well as the idosyncracies of the fellas without venturing too far from the shore. Jerry's just right, Bobby's, well Bobby, Phil is blowing up Godzilla's scrotum with every measure, Vinny's just right, the duo is hammering in time and Bruce cleans up the act, putting some polish on the boys.
I love Europe 90 first sets, so for moi the first set rocks balls after Touch and Walkin'. They make up for their somewhat weak first few laps with seven, count 'em nine tunes after that.
On the whole the 2nd set is pretty tame, though the scary Victim is a nice touch, lilting Eyes, decent Estimated...5 in musicianship, 5 in sound, 3.5 for 2nd set's somewhat straightforward inspiration.

...
vocals aren't that bad here... he sounded worse in 85 with the creaky vocals due to the drug abuse.... you'll always find a good show here and there... i agree the quantity isn't there in the 90's like it was in the 70's and 80's... but still man... get out of the 70's... i realize that that's prime dead, and i agree.... nothing beats late 73-74... or 76-78... but still there's alot of great stuff to be discovered in the late 80's-90... just give it a shot...

While Deadworld was getting over the loss of Brent, Bruce did a fantastic job of helping out the music. We were a hurting bunch. Brent's death was devastating.
...
I always thought this run should have gotten more pub, its really good, but a completely different sound that 4 months prior. While the songs are very well played, they have that West Coast mellowness (if that's a word) to them.
The Stander on the Mountain is epic!
Bruce can really be heard in this Europe '90 run. Stander, Valley Road??WTF?? Awesome!!!!!
Great quality here. I had 2nd gen analog's of this entire run. But these are much better.
Gotta Love the Archive.

I loved this version of Stander on the Mountian...By far the best Dead version. Overall this show smoked...Phil thumps all over this show. Check out the

sick effects during the Victim. There was an evil "roar" sound throughout this version. The jam out of Victim is epic...the band then cascades into a beautiful and joyful Eyes. One extreme to another. Sound quality remarkably crisp.
