Quick Escape
Remember it well, an easy, last minute drive from CSU Chico and we were there! Psychedelic light show, warm comfort, friends, and a high energy show …

Kaiser shows never disappointed in those days, and in the moment we knew this was a special one. So happy thinking back on these wonderful days gone by.

Light show/ What Light Show?? What shoow? Missed it.
Yerp Snip ,this is a show I have never been to(?), yet I have heard this and the other nites of this run so many times I feel like I had. Always liked

this one, it was a highlight of our infatuation with space when I twas a high school young head etc or whatever I am. people didn't loveheads in 84, then by 87 they were all seeing them also, etc. . We used to listen to the space and the Beam part, which we called thenasty machine, in our Lexington High School parking lot. A few months later Justn Bornnyerp and I told our parents goodbye and said we were going to Gergs house in NH, but, truly we were , at the age of 18, and went to LOgan and flew to Oakland from Boston to the Kaiser for 2/8,9/86. We got Busted cause Ian somehow messed it up, or som similar event. Then I was banned from Just In's House..However, s I have told my parents since, we also did that for 8/30/85 Houston. We were somewhat adventurous, but what better place to runaway to so your parents will know you are probably safe...an arena filled with 70000000 kind people. They didn't really see it that way, but they were ok. They still don't get why this band is still always leading me out west or to places they have never heard of, like Chicago. .....after 200 plus shows they ask why. My dads with Jerry now. and all is well. Beam dude, Beam. But hey, they went with me to Philly 4/20/84, and I usually see the band on 12/28, my dads b-day, who passed last year so 12/28/15 was special, and they always do a good show on the 12/28 unit o four existence. Onward, Augy, see ya soon. I like Augy's review cause he be like the show was this but my head was that and as such it was like this. I cant rate this, its a six.9

Second set is very, very juicy. They closed out the summer of 85' with some damn trippy ones. The Playing In the Band is second to 7/1 Merriwether, IMO...

1985 - It Still Shines
The last truly great yar for the Dead in my view Out of the 94 shows I saw, 26 were in '85. I missed these shows, although I did see the kaiser shows
...
for Chinese New Year's, Mardi Gras/Valentine's Day and New year's '86, entire run each time. A very special place to see the Dead, you had to be there to understand. Great Playin, on of the few last good jams. I love help on teh Way but I can see why they shelve it for four years after this one. These aren;t on my list of top '85 shows but that isn;t saying much, they are still real soild shows nad I would get all three. Wanted to add - they also did the video screens at the two New Year's shows at the Coliseum. I was there for those, I thought they were great, a very nice twist to the shows for sure. I had forgotten about the video screens until four or five years ago. I had that Pay Per View from '85 New Year's on a beta tape but can't seem to locate it. I have all of my others but something happened to that one. It's gotta be out there. So I know of no other video footage of the band from those 5 Bay Area shows in '85 with the light show.
These shows were billed as the 20th anniversary of the Acid Tests, and there was the most beautiful psychedelic light show on huge screens behind the stage
...
all three nights--lots of just pure lights and colors, and also cool old vintage cartoons from the 20s and 30s that seemed to sync uyp with the jams in the most delightful ways. all in all, it was some trippy shit--great music, not too crowded, those lights and videos. Wow. I believe this was the third night, so they had it all broken in.

I can tell you more about the light show then ...

they seldom put as much emphasis on this after the early days, with this one being a huge exception)! But obviously, there is no video record of that as far as I know. By the way, I'm usually personally more interested in the music, no matter how good the lights are at any concert, i.e. hypothetically, a performance was poor but with fantastic lights, I'd still say the show was poor. Or if one could choose, but only between a poor performance with great lights and a good, or even mediocre performance with little or not much of a light show per se; I'd definitely choose the later! Having said that, obviously it may imply this was probably not a good show; on the contrary it was quite a good performance also. Not the greatest I've seen but pretty good! Extremely unfortunately, for me this date conjures up more memories of lingering negative stuff personally, thus obscuring what if I as a descent performance. Although, again relative to the many others I attended during this era, which I've heard more of on tape than this one, I'm slightly hesitant to jump out on a limb saying this music is as good as the lights. (As I've stated elsewhere several times, most of my recordings are in storage besides those that were stolen or I only heard as someone else's copy, this falling into the last category if I got a copy it was shortly before I had to put them away). In any case, given the set list, at the time I was pretty happy with it. And most certainly, it was as an alternative to the afore-mentioned surrounding circumstances, (that we all have in our own context from time to time), quite welcome! Therefore I'll give it a 4.
