This is a terrible horrible show. The jack Straw s like Hartford 86. The Cassady is like 4/18/84 (A day with no show) The lazy Lightning sounds like a Cocaine distribution center I used to live at in Orlando, near the darkstar that was played there in like 1990. The Never Trust a Woman is the best song in the show, way better than anything that jerry guy can spit up. And who is that Bob freak, doing that Supplication jam. Its like something straight out of Saturday Night Live. Anyways, if ya wanna hear a great show, stick to the fall 1986 Tour. Try 4/4/86, and for 1984 try the space in 4/30/84. That's worse than Halloween III. Is the anniversary of the day the USA pulled out of Vietnam, and the space clearly reflects that. very very nasty delicious painful space. The kind of show u would go with a girlfriend who you wanted to break up with, cause afer she heard that she'd dump u unless she was a hard core head.
So, happy listening.

I was in the U.S. Army (but already a 10 year Deadhead) and drove up from Monterey to attend this show. Stupid of me not to have gone to all three, BUT......
...this baby did not disappoint, and was arguably the best of the three.
I remember how utterly crystal-clear the sound system was, and how relaxed and healthy the guys were. They were superbly tight , just crackling, and Bobby was in fine form especially, blowing a penny whistle (expertly) during Space.
This was the kind of show where they didn't break out the Dark Star,
but just concentrated on fine craftsmanship and a rollickin' good time without a trace of sloppiness. Of course, the Great Cosmic Musical Adventures are what we all come to hear, but, for me, two-plus hours of ultra-competent and playfully inventive music is completely satisfying.

Great show, great recording.
We have so much to be thankful for, so let's use this space for the wonderful things about the music and our friendships that developed through it. Sure, review a show for musical creativity and sound, but really? Let's have a bit of a reality check and get on with our lives.
Simply put, the music is hear for us to enjoy, not to bicker over.
I usually reserve my reviews for shows i was at, was there. all of em, greeks, each year. Loved em all. nuff said.

I'll never forget how psyched I was when they opened with Jack Straw into Sugaree. It's still a great memory. That was one of the better places to see them play, they seemed at home there for obvious reasons. Anyhow, the sound at the show was perfect. I despise sound board tapes, they loose all the vibe. The tape speeds up the tempo quite a bit which unfortunately strips away some of the groove. To all of you that are nit picking the shit out of their performance all I can say is...............................

The show is tight and mostly uninteresting. However, the version of Never Trust a Woman should not be absent from your Best of Brent tape. It is quintessential. Love Jerry's solo.
And I've always been partial to this show's crisp Sailor-Saint. Beyond that, whatevah.
Did I mention the version of Never Trust a Woman rocks? It's nice shot of classic rock misogyny to counterbalance the trite lameness of Women Are Smarter, a song that should have remained in the trash heap of tunes rejected from the original Scooby Doo as "too white."

I think this is one of the better early 80's shows I have come across (and I don't pretend to have heard them all). Sugaree, Lazy Lighning, China Rider are all well played. The highlight, believe it or not, is Not Fade Away, with it's funky intro. The pace of the show seems to be faster than others and I wonder if this is either the original recording or the Dead were just stepping everything up a beat that night. This show is defintely worth listening too.

Let's face it, you can never have too amny Greek Theatre shows. '82 emerged as one of my least favourite years to collect as my tape collection ballooned and I concentrated on other years. That being said I always liked my Frost from later this year---it had my earliest Touch of Grey and Throwing Stones as well as superb Playin'>Crazy---and had been given the first set of this show back in the days when I had maybe ten tapes to my name. Needless to say, with the incendiary Jack Straw>Sugaree combo and sick versions of Cumberland and Lazy Lightning, my gang and I played the living shit out of that tape. Rockin'!
Unfortunately, like much '82 handed to me, the pitch was fast---not annoyingly so but enough to to notice and to maybe imbibe an extra smoke or two to get past it. Plus there was considerably more tape hiss as the Dolby wars raged and ruined many a good tape. This version is much, much better and I'm re-discovering it with glee. Too bad I can't download it. But I'm sure I'll find it elsewhere and hey....after all these years I finally get to hear the rest of the show!!
Gotta say the hostility on this review page was kinda disturbing. Makes me sad that people are sniping at people they may have laughed and danced with back in the day.

By the way, whats up with using all caps. That's wacked out in itself. So you defie someone to find a better Woman are Smarter? Well I just listened to it and its good. You state the obvious, take a stab in the dark at any of these songs from Greek 82 and they will be above average if not best of's. That being said I prefer the later 80's versions esp. the 89 tour. There are some real good 85's like 6-27 Saratoga and 9-11-85 HJK. Now quit wasting are time by comparing Woman are Smarter version's you goof.
ps. Cumberland is a rare best of 4 for 82 and that L.L. is so sick.

I didn't get this middle show when I should have, and what a shame. It's a great one with a superb Lazy Lightning>Supplication, and the China Cat/Rider is no slouch either. They were playing like they meant it. Not just another day at the office. All these Greek dates(and Moscone too for that matter)are full of energy that's not always present. Among the best! 5 stars for sound and fury.

Dude what are you doing here? We can all tell good quality from bad quality sound. Can you just go away I get hives every time you review a show because you are always dead wrong and add nothing - without fail everytime.
Erruh, back to the business at hand. This is a simply incredible first set. Everything I mean every note they play smokes. Hard to pick a favorite as they are all long and really good. Sugaree, Cassidy, Lazy Lightning, and that Deal wow!!
Set II is equally hot and up there with the Greek show in July with the Hells Angels and 8/4 Keil.

I'm amazed at how well Garcia is singing. In my opinion, he's singing the best out everyone else is the band. This is why i love early 82. The vocals. Not to mention, this is one high energy show. Still, I can't get over how well Garcia is singing. His voice is strong and not thin.

Subject: Another good show at the Greek
Subject: Another good show at the Greek
1st Set: Let's kick off the festivities with a good "Jack Straw" that never approaches rock-star levels. It's focused, but I've been blown away by live 'Straws,' this one would Not have done that. A casual segue into an easy-listening "Sugaree" continues matters. Is "Cassidy" as your third tune an oddity in '82? Anyways, not terribly dramatic but easily digestible. "Tenneesee" keeps the carefree good times rolling along at a 'B' pace. Likewise for this "Minglewood;" the show appears to be dedicated to keep the masses moving. "Cumberland" adheres well to that philosophy. "Lazy" is well-performed but containing little of the whiplash that epitomizes the best versions. In fact, that lack of 'bite' is preventing this show from reaching that next level. However, the last few vocalizing moments before the transition to "Supplication" contain desperate pleas. And we're closing this Completely uptempo first set with some words of caution in the form of a worthy set-ending "Deal." "Thank ya all; we're going to take a short break and be back in just a few minutes."
2nd Set: 45 minutes later, those familiar "China" chords appear. This version is choppy (in a good way) and frisky. Things really tense up in the late 4's...by the turn of the numeral we're rocking out. Vocally, "Rider" is not at the highest point of virility, but the version pleases nonetheless. Does Bobby coyly sing the cloyingly "Man Smart" before he beds his umpteenth groupie of this month? The energy is still all about the 'dance.' The new tunes continue with an early "Good/Never Trust," or whatever its title is today. So the XX's are smart, but are Not to be trusted. Oy...then us XY's are in for a looong life. Apparently, this is song-y night as we're in for the "Lost/Saint" combo. "Circumstance" is intense and hot especially during the longed-for climax in the late 10's early 11's... Smart choice to finally slow things down with "He's Gone", we need some percussive/rhythmic variety. Brent and Jerry's interplay on this outro jam is quite intricate. "Drums" has been cut and we reemerge intensely with "Space." After a few, matters chill out, and we're left with speculative melodies that eventually build momentum into a "NFA." The rest of the song is standard. We then sail into a rousing "Wharf." Let's rock ourselves "Around and Around." Bobby's vocals are rather twang-y rock-abillyish...the music is kinda sloppy but oh well.. it segues into a mild salsa-like intro of "Good Lovin." It's good times, Bobby starts a social conscious plea, "There's a darkness upon this world , that's what everybody seems to say...We're going to make it, going to change it, noone's going to do it for us..." Shit, that'll win the essay contest sponsored by Vanity Fair...
Jerry sounds like he smoked something backstage during the break as his voice waffles, and he's off the song's timing. That being said, it's a bright and fine version of "US Blues."
Frankly, last night's show is more interesting though this set list at first appears more entertaining
Then again, it's still a strong gig.

Subject: NFA rivals 11.8.79
This show is easy to review because everyone else has already said everything necessary but since it is soo fantastically 'scorching' as is aptly put here, I need to put in my two cents.
The NFA jam is special. There are flurries of angry jamming by Garcia and he really gets down with it. The NFA rivals my favorite, 11.8.79- also features the only DEW of '79!
Back to this show...Brent lives it up and Bobby seems to be 'on' and the show just rocks. I just listend to the entire show on a long car ride back from NYC.
It is a 5 star show but the recording gets 4.5 stars from me and I will be conservative and round down. I use the sbd recording of 3/5/92 here in the archive as the basis for A + five star sound. There is some minor fluctuation in the recording. Things are not normalized. The vocals can be loud then soft at times. But hey I downloaded it; it rocks and you will be very pleased.

This one of the first shows I got when I started collecting tapes around 1983. Excellent quality recording, combined with a scorching performance. Here's another vote for the first set. It's all good, but the Lazy Lightning > Supplication is VERY tight. This show also contains my favorite version of Brent's "Good Times Blues (aka Never Trust A Woman)." VERY soulful, and the reverb on his vocal mike just makes it that much better.
Good stuff here... download it and enjoy!

Yes, although I missed the last two years at the Greek, I still maintain the first two years were the best ! Even as good, as many of the folowing years were.
Unfortunately, at least as far as I've seen, (perhaps in books I've yet to read), there aren't many photos of the Tie-Dye from this year. There are quite a few pictures of the next year, and indeed it was memorable but an range of 2.8-3.5 hours of music, (counting 1981 as well), amid the most wild colored sheets I've probably ever seen was pretty invigorating. (Not to brag, but they even played Lazy Lightin' immediately after I called it at the top of my lungs) !
I'll write more later.
