Subject: Great Wharf Rat
Subject: Great Wharf Rat
For reasons unknown-this is one of my favorite Wharf's.
It will (like the rest of the show) lull you to sleep, but its got a sadness and innocence that I can relate to-its about as close as I've ever been to Jerry. This is also a version in which I believe Jerry forgets the lyrics. If you listen very carefully (it comes in much better on my cassette) at the 1:20 mark, someone (Bobby?) is reminding Jerry of the words to the next verse: "my name....my NAME". This version makes me want to be a hobo right smack in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf.
The rest of the show is serviceable. I've never even listened to the 1st set-I'm a 2nd set kind of guy. The Terrapin is sweet and the Black Muddy encore is gut wrenching. Alot of people (see the compendium) see this show as a failure-but I don't/ Its a good honest show, I just think Jerry is incredibly high. And there is no soundboard that I know of..happy lisetning.

Subject: Porn Show!
Compariable to the night before, the perfect outdoor evening show, this was the perfect outdoor daytime show. And the most humorous SPACE with a sampling of porn :26 seconds in; ORGASM SPACE!
Also a crowd cheer during Friend of the Devil is the result of a guy crossing the stage from Phil's side to in front of Jerry. Phil makes note during Tom Thumb Blues with the comment "security don't need you..."

Amazing experience. Grand performance. Layed-back,psychedelic with a 'Congo'atomosphere. Some of the most unusual playing iv'e heard by the band. They had a way of creating at Alpine Valley,it brought the best out of them. The acustics there are amazing to say the least,There is richness and full bodied drive snarling out from the wooden roof like some animal.I hear there are no soundboards of these shows. The playing is off the charts and the quality is a strong 3.

Subject: Worth hearing, but the first show is much more vital.
Subject: Worth hearing, but the first show is much more vital.
1st Set: A lively "Iko" if not as 'sparky' as last night's energy. "Greatest" is also well-played, but not explosive. There's a warm and fuzzy feeling as they enter "Stagger's" territory, but it's not the most dynamic version. I really dig how Jerry plays rhythm guitar to Brent's Hammond's work...(around 3:55, 4:20) on "Minglewood" It's a good-time, let's get drunk and boogey version. This caring "FOTD" is better than average, though not particularly wanted (on my end;) Brent adds his fiddlish synth to his solo at 4:30. Clearly audible 'We want Phil" chants are echoed by the 40,000 plus at the 'Pine... and he responds, 'ok, just this once' Hey, is this the first "Just Like?" Anyways, at the very least, it's one of the first played in '87. Anyways, it's just fine... although I really do dig the Cheese's versions in '03 better. The slight funk means we're in for a trip down to "West LA." It's quite nice; this band sounds like they're transitioning nicely into the fuller-broader sounds of '88. Alright, I'll suffer through "Esau." A call-out in the name of 'Jed' is a good call. It's decent, but things really get groovin' with the ensuing "Let it Grow." The jam isn't spectacular, but it's always enjoyable.
Ummm... I'm assuming the "BMRiver" is just out of sequence, and that's the encore... I've always really enjoyed hearing this, why was it dropped for several years? Ironically, it almost appropriately became the last song the band ever would play together, til Phil covinced the boys to send the sagging crowd with an uplifting "Box."
2nd Set: "Uncle" is smooth and consistently engaging. There's no outro jam as it we move on to "Playing." It's all good stuff but nothing approaching jammy-jams found later in the decade. "Terrapin" is strong and potent which segues into "Drums." They pass, as they do, and we're left with a pleasant two minute period where we're just waiting for Jerry to allow the noodling "Truckin's" theme to become the actual song. The song starts out blandly, but picks up steam and makes for a nice climax at 7:30. "TOO" feels rushed. "Wharf" is fine, but the band's going through the motions, even if the motions are slightly stronger than average. "Lovelight" goes down awfully well, tho I prefer the Greek's version.

This was not my first dead show experience, but the first time I left "home". Numb, unable to talk without confusing myself & eyes WIDE open... swirling around Alpine Valley with the rest of the audience- this show has depth, and intricacies like only a few shows I have ever heard. I was there, and as such biased, but you will find that songs you had heard many times before, had special sounds rupturing into other dimensions. The first set is on fire with group-think talent! The second set delves deeper into the ol' standards that were very special this night... A good example is the UJB>Playing has some very good & timely effects "world at my command" is the epitome of what it is all about. These shows & the four nights in '88 I would guess are the reasons they brought out their video equipment to tape "Downhill from here..." in '89. They new it was good at the time, but likley didn't realize it may have been one of the last highlights for the reel until they came to name it for their VHS release.
These runs of Alpine shows were later written up in "Relix" as the specific culmination point in time that the Grateful Dead had regained many things that had been lost during the early '80s. All 3 nights were good, but a careful ear put to this second night will yield that golden nectar we all yearn for today.
The sound on these shows is pretty normal for what I've come to expect for audience taped music. The first set is very good for the Grateful Dead, 5 Stars! The second set I love because I was there and EXPERIENCED it, but for the casual listener, it will be a 3 star. Overall this set gets 4 stars.

And this show is a big reason why. So many amazing things happened on this day that I couldn't begin to sum them up here. Suffice it to say that it was just one of those days where everything just fell into place...great weather, great people, great cushy campin' on the golf course...4:30 showtime so that the second set started with the stage bathed in the glow of the sun...the whole band in sunglasses lookin' cool...my first Let it Grow, which I was desparately hoping for (during the start of LIG, when I'm just freakin' with joy that they're playin' it, this dude taps me on the shoulder. I turn around and he's holdin' my hat in his hand...it was a red welders cap with blue tropical flowers on it...and I feel the top of my head and my hat's still there.
"Pretty fuckinl wild, ain't it?" he says, and hands me a bottle of Jose Cuervo. I take a swig, he takes a swig, we high five, and off he goes...and that's how my first Let It Grow started.
The second set is full of what the Dead were about in '87. Not a lot of segue jammin', but internal jams within songs were ferocious, and the songs were generally nailed to the wall with authority.
The Terrapin is mesmerizing. I remember the security guards on the walls surrounding Alpine all stopped scanning the scene outside and just watched the stage for awhile...
