Alpine was a melee of chaos during this peak of The Grateful Dead. Camping in a free for all atmosphere. Here is a story, "we hiked up to the top of the ski resort (crossing a fence) then resort security caught us coming down the hill. Alpine Valley Ski security proceeded to interogate us in a room for a bit of time which was illegal and silly!" Fear and Loathing in Alpine Valley. After this surreal event we returned to the psychedelic bash and enjoyed the ride.

Was at this epic run on a drive W to my new home in CO. Remember the Other One coming out of space, almost like they ushered in a spirit into the air, it was tangible.

I will never forget Alpine '88 and the Dust Bowl. I had my heart broken (I gave it away to a Foolish Heart!). I went to about 35 shows, and nothing compared to the energy of Alpine!
The next year brought the mud bowl, but luckily I wasn't on the lawn.
Did you know that the summer of 1988 was one of the greatest natural disasters in US History. I looked it up. Thousands died, and I was dehydrated, trippin' balls and happy as hell. Thank you.

My buddy and I did not sit in the heat. We walked down to the Lodge and sipped Strawberry Margaritas in the A/C'ed bar. We entered through the side gate sans a line feeling 100%. The crowd looked so exhausted from the heat. But they kept on dancin'!
Alpine valley was the best venue. Don't understand all the complaints about the heat and mud and all the stuff you can't control. The middle " day off" was horrible in the heat. But we went to Lake Geneva and swam a lot. You got to make lemonade.
We thought the 4 nights were all really fun. We had seats in the pavilion and serious bruises on our legs from so much dancing! Loved all the new songs.
6 songs into drums, 2nd set Cumberland, Box not encoring, this was my favorite night!
But yah, we did a lot of rescuing of kids that hot dusty week. Iced towels, A/C in the car, huge amount of well iced water bottles, rides into town. All a part of the fab Alpine experience.
Just listening now to the recording, sound just fine. Want a sound board though.

All the talk this week about how it ain't been this hot since the summer of '88 just natcherly made me think about that red clay and dead grass in the big lot at Alpine and how after we filled it up they just kinda closed it off and we just sorta lived there for the next 5 or 6 desert-like days in a sort of surreal happydelic haze and that was the straw that broke the camel's back 'cause next year during the big rains the new security goons mgmt. hired rousted us all from our tents at 3AM and we had to go elsewhere and we and the Boys never came back (Well guess THAT honeymoon's over) . The West had Shoreline and Oakland, The East had Hampton and MSG, but for 6 or 7 blissful years, Alpine was our blissful summit, for all its cheesy flaws, and I'd give anything for a chance to hear a heatstroked Jer screw up Stella again just one more time.

The entire Alpine '88 run pales in comparison to what would come a year later, but it still had it's moments. As others have said, the heat was *brutal* forcing all campers out of their tents by 10AM just to escape the heat inside them. But, enough of that. This show was just "OK", Jack Straw was nice, and I still remember the red, white and blue lights that ended U.S Blues.
The problem was the new material. "Victim" was a dreadful experience before the midi years, and this one was no exception. Ear-bleeding feedback after a day of heat stroke was not the best Dead experience one could hope for...
This was one of those runs of shows that the campground scene before and after was more fun than the shows themselves.

A good (very good at points), but not great show. The first set is strong if not earth shattering, highlights are Jack Straw, Box of Rain, Loser, and Cassidy.
The second half of the second set is the best part of the show, in my opinion (which is interesting, because the second half of the second set at the next show was awful). Everything is inspired and played with gusto and high energy (although The Other One could've been longer). This night and the final show were the best of this Alpine run, although it wasn't quite up there with Hampton in the spring, for example. That's not a knock, though. A real good late 80's show, and a good audience recording (especially for Alpine). A good one to get even if you weren't there.

I've seen the Dead at Alpine Valley about 12 or 13 times. This show may be the best I've ever seen.... by anybody (Dead or otherwise). I remember it was 110 degrees outside during the day. Hot as hell on that sloping lawn. The moment that sticks out the most was the drums section. Just when it seemed like it was starting to wind down, Mickey Hart started playing a timpani-like drum and running up the scale at a faster and faster speed. I remember it was really intense and people were screaming and just going nuts. 22 years later I can still hear it in my mind.

I got in w/ a 87 new years spare(there was room on the lawn)Jack Straw is a favorite although 87 version at end of third show w/Bill and Mickey INTENSE jamming drumming was better.87 i thought it, or I was going to explode.88 during Box during the end I will forever remember the feeling of joy and floating away across the beautiful meadow. still with me 22 years later.Loser GREAT Jerry singing and awesome solo. I love when he hits the feedback. Really awesome sound for a shed. No one mentioned the Ship o' Fools. It was like they were playing all my favorites. INTENSE CLEAR Jerry great solo. Truckin and Terrapin. I agree the energy got a little low for me anyway. every Other One is great. I liked this one too. Going to Buckeye fake after the run. That was actually a great show too, but lets admit Alpine 87,88,89 is surreal and something none of us will forget..
keep a cool head, and warm heart.
live w/PRIDE that is perserverence, responsibilty, integrity, determination, and excitement. I LOVE JERRY bluegrass trashgrass. i miss you all.

i figured ide post this in here since the first Blow Away was played at this show. for all brent fans check out this Dark Star Orcehstra show at the Klein Theatre in Bridgeport, CT from 11-23-08. Rob Barraco their keyboardist does a spot on version of Blow Away that will blow you away. I was at this show an it really blew my mind how much he sounded like Brent. the sound quality of this show is excellent too, it almost sounds like SBD.

Subject: New tunes in the dust bowl
Subject: New tunes in the dust bowl
Overall: same as night before: great show, okay recording. AUD recording that i give a B for sound quality, but my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Camus regardless. I was never a taper, but I suspect it was a tough venue to get a great AUD recording due to the boominess and large space under the roof.
The scene: dust bowl. The inside of the bus was getting filled with flies and dust and our collective funk wasn't making matters any better! :-) We were selling soda and juice and the heat was making for some brisk sales (what the f*ck, it's only a buck). For this night, I hung out on the Phil side over by the level area where there was plenty of space to get my freak dance on, which from this night on became my standard spot for Alpine shows ('88, '89, and '98 Other Ones). Two new songs on this night continued the new-tune-trend of the summer of 88. By the middle of the tour we'd heard more new tunes than the band had put out in about a decade. A few would evenutally fall away (Gentlemen, Start Your Engines and Believe it or Not, noteably), but others would become standards for years to come.
The music: Set I: "you keep us on the run" ... POW! A decent Jack Straw that sounds like it's going to bowl you over and then backs off just slightly. Box as second song? Strange and awesome - was that just him trying to preempt the inevitable "we want Phil" chants? Bobby puts some punch in a couple of lines in an otherwise unnoteworthy Memphis. Loser is strong. Others have noted that this is a strong Cassidy. It is, but the drooling comments here maybe gave me too high expectations. It's good, but not amazing.
Set II: Although this was technically the second Victim, for most people this was the first time they heard it (myself included). I wasn't an immediate fan. It wasn't until they started doing some creepy jams that I started to really warm to it. This version is basic considering where they took it later (best in my book was 12/31/89 into Dark Star). Cumberland has never been a fave of mine, but it definitely got the mood back on the positive side. Then ... wah? another new song?? Jeez, these guys are just bringing it! Brent's first Blow Away. As a big Brent fan, I was psyched to hear this, and compared with Victim, Brent brings this hard and heavy - great little vocal improv section ending with "if you ain't got love, you ain't got sh*t!!" The jam portion could have been better (and was, of course, in later versions) and Brent's vocals should have been a bit louder, but overall a great intro of this song. Bobby gets some sympathy applause for not remembering Truckin lyrics. Most expected drums after Truckin, but Jerry extends things with nice, but not particularly noteworthy, Terrapin. A sparse Other One creeps out of space and then turns itself into a rockin/freaky number. I find it hard to rate Other Ones, as (1) there are so many, and (2) they are often good in different ways. Having said that, I think this is a really great one for this late 80s era. Bobby does a nice old-school "get the girl next to you" rap in Good Lovin and ends the show with some high energy. US Blues keeps the energy going for the encore, which was nice.

Subject: TBC...it's less snobbish
1st Set: 68 seconds of excited crowd/tuning precede a patient "Jack Straw." Bobby's not quite ready for prime-time but everyone else sounds strong. Nothing tantamount to breathing, but strong nonetheless. Everyone's feeling good that the boys are back on stage, why not indulge with "Box". Arm around another, and sing-along... The intro of "West LA" is feeling awfully 'Minglewoodish' in its approach although it's not as dance-floor loose. Hearty stuff. "Memphis Blues" feels earlier than usual, but Bobby's dramatics/emotional pleas mostly ring true. Things grow somber, but no less thrilling with "Loser." "Cassidy" adds excitement to my bones adding a titilating jam midway through that climaxes twenty seconds too early. "Ease" ends this first set with perky aplomb.
2nd Set: Well, you finally make your first appearance. A direct encroachment of dread. this "Victim" guarantees throw every virgin in the 40,000 audience heads. "Cumberland" isn't amazing but good vibes as is evidenced by the audience applause after the final chorus and the imagined smiling. "Blow Away" is stymied by Brent's lack of a confident presentation though its debut could hardly be called a failure. "Ship" oy...but Jerry's true to each line. "Truckin" breathes a purposeful groove but lacks depth besides a few Jerry lines here and again. The band is in that zone where everything sounds smooth and easy..."Terrapin" "Drums" and "Space" proceed cleanly...my goodness I'm lacking the burst of energy myself. The second half of the set is like professional above-average 'Dead' clockwork where the nooks and crannies have zero fuel leakages. They're in 'stadium-satisfier' mode..."Wharf" is the weakest of the bunch with "Around" standing out for serious chuggish and Bobby rapping silliness all throughout "Good Lovin."

It's all here. Creative.Creative,creative. It's Alpine Valley and very good audience recordings, especially the first night. Download these shows, turn off your light, light some candles and i'm quite sure you will think of some other things to do. let the natural ambience of Alpine Valley soar into your soul. You could even call this collection of 4 shows a 'Quadrilogy' 4 for sound quality but every show here is excellent 5 stars!

Anyone out there have a Sound Board of these first nights 88 Alpine ?
I rate this an A quality Audience but that only gets three stars if there is a SB to be had.
Listen to Bobby gggo on Cassidy...
Great shows and my first other than Dylan Dead in Mpls with Tom Petty which STANK due to poor sound.
Check out Blackbird final night of these shows...
I can't remember clearly but it seems like there was some sort of radio frequency breaking in during space first or second night... any one else out there confirm this ? Wet sheets all around - I remember looking up hill at the audience just after sunset and the heat rising off the crowd like heat above a grill - catching the Jamican colored lights from the stage and this huge guitar riff and wash of sound made the whole heat wave waver and shake... Music made visible...mmmmmm to go back...

This will sound like I'm stealing Phil's lines from his interview in "The Grateful Dead Movie."
During the show itself, I just couldn't find my happy place. It seemed like work, or forced, or maybe just the heat. I remember storming out quickly after the nights work was done, thinking I never wanted to tape another show. Two nights later, of course, back doing more of same.
Listening to the tapes, they were wonderful. The Jack Straw opener was heartfelt from the first notes. This is a wonderful performance of it to get to know really well.
Phil plays that big, warm, wooden roof at Alpine so well, and the Box shows it off. Again, there is a feeling to this show ... far more intimate, say, than the "Downhill From Here" show a year later. (Which by the way, sucks ... NOT.)
Highlight ... Cassidy. This one is better than sex. Brent debuts Blow Away.
Another fine example of why the Summer 1988 tour was so highly regarded.
The roof at Alpine IS boomy ... and on these nights, the guitars sounded driven. And the Wisconsin crowd shows that they can whoop it up with the best of the East Coasters.
Burn the first set onto a CD now and play it over and over, you won't be disappointed.

I was at this show and it totally smoked. It was the first Blow Away, and I always remembered Brent singing, "If you ain't got love, you ain't got shit!!!" The Terrapin and Other One were also awesome.
Back in the day, though, I got a tape from a taper that was much better quality than this recording. I hope an even better version comes out soon.
