The band is absolutely on fire during this night, the first set and on this duo. It amazes me that this amazing show is totally forgotten.

I love that this version wanders far from the Playin' theme and becomes more like the open thematic jams that the band would do out of Truckin' or after Dark Star or TOO between 72-74. Very rare for PITB.

This is the only version of this song I know of with three instrumentals and clocks in at over seven minutes.. The only reason it is not more well known is the absurd prejudices Deadheads have preconceived in them against the early 80's for various reason which would require an essay into human pysche and how easy it is to mold it.

It is not the longest Dew after 1974. The previious one on the East Coast, .rochester 9/2/80 is certainly longer...just checked, 11:06 to 10:08. Buffalo was probably shorter than a number of Dews in 81 as well, like 9/11 and 12/31. Length aside, it was an excellent, extrememly beautifully played Dew that we had waited for nine months, a over a year on the East Coast since Rochester, to get broken out. Well worth the wait.
