Playin' In The Band

Civic Center

Deep and weird, capping a set full of loose fun. They get into it and it's all business with a wild trans into UJB, slipknot tease, and a great outro.

Seems like they're just having a great old time jamming together. A loose, fun-filled 1st set capping off a great month in Dead history.

The Ark

A beautiful monster with intrepid intricacies throughout. Rhythmic Jerry investigations of the theme plus Tom C. on celeste.

Massive and dark with fantastic interplay between everybody on stage. Doesn't quite melt down, but dances next to chaos just perfectly.

Bird Song
Oct. 30, 1972
Ford Auditorium

Unfortunate cut, probably just a tape flip, but an otherwise gorgeous, flying vintage '72 Bird Song that lifts of and soars.
Playin' In The Band

Cleveland Public Hall

Better without headphones. Mix problems are less obvious in an ambient environment. Sad about the cut, though: Jerry is carving wormholes through spacetime while Billy plays every sound in the forest and every wave in the ocean across infinite eons.
Box of Rain
Oct. 28, 1972
Cleveland Public Hall

Tighter than the 09th and 26th, and only the third one performed apart from the '70 show. Quite beautifully performed, even if Billy's drums are a bit high in the mix.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

...the Bertha Board, natch.
Nobody's Fault But Mine
Oct. 2, 1972
Springfield Civic Center

A clear and strong statement of the NFBM melody, tighter and more deliberate than the 26th and 27th versions.
