Playin' In The Band
July 18, 1972
Rossevelt Stadium

Hard-driver with intense 10/4 jamming throughout. Phil and Billy give it extra oomph. Great mix with Keith and Jer up front and clear.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
July 18, 1972
Rossevelt Stadium

One of those rare ones where China Cat plods a bit and they move into a blazing hot Rider. Great show all around, too.

Keith plays beautifully on this.

Brown Eyed Women

Like with all Winter '73s the band is in excellent form. Bobby's slashing chords behind Big Jer just make this one an uptempo gem.

Sweet and lovely. Jerry's virtuoso fillagree behind Bobby's smooth-as-smoke vocals just slay me here.

Mellow or not, this one doesn't have a note or flam out of place. Everything is recording-studio perfect. What a beautiful night this must of been, full of the mahalo spirit of these magical islands.

Here in Hawaii for work (!!!) and I just had a few minutes to tune in to some good old Grateful Dead, then remembered this show. Wow, just wow, this is a perfect version. The band is pristine and perfect, the vocals are aching and beautiful. I know I listed it here, and now I'm commenting on it, but jeez if any of you don't know about the Hawaii shows, I recommend you check out this beautiful version: They definitely flowed perfectly with the mahalo spirit. Historically important too, as these were the last shows with Tom Constanten, ending the Aoxamoxoa era and ushering in the Country Dead.
Tomorrow Is Forever

Milwaukee Performing Arts Center

Comes as part of a nice down-to-earth half-set after the audience got slingshot past Mars with an epic Star. Donna sounds so good here - this was always her time to shine with Jerry.
Dark Star
Oct. 23, 1972
Milwaukee Performing Arts Center

Out of the chaos and violence of the crashing stars at the heart of this meltdown coalesces a resonant ohm unlike any other re-entry I know of from this era of enormous Dark Stars. What a wild ride these krazy kids got in Milwaukee on this night. It sounds like they're just about to go back into the melody and theme for another round when MHUT pops up in all its earthiness and probably helped more than one shaken head rediscover that both their feet were indeed still on the ground.
