Not Fade Away
April 7, 1971
Boston Music Hall

The jam before is listed as a controlled mind-altering substance in 92 countries, but its cut on the archive is the cruelest thing I know.

Intense, driving energy. Phil belts out the chorus like his life depends on it.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Boston Music Hall

CCS is supremely tight, with a bit of that '69 magic sound to it, and IKYR rocks. Followed by a Stephen, so maybe some nostalgia? Sounds great.

Hard to Handle
April 4, 1971
Manhattan Center

Great 'Bobby segment', as his solo has come to be known. Whole show overshadowed by the outrageous monster the next day, but still great fun.

Sugar Magnolia
March 24, 1971
Winterland Arena

Actually one god-dammned hard rockin' blast-off: Uptempo and hardcore.

Cumberland Blues

Stanley Theatre

Yeah the Dark Star's cool... but did you hear the Cumberland?!? It's like they each had 100 fingers.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

Nice and tweaky. But how about his manic-mouse pizzicato background around minute 3:00. Throughout this show it seems like they're having a blast.
Big River
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

Goddamned right hvd Sleuth. I love it when some of the so-called "filler" songs crackle and pop and remind you why the Dead were the finest band in the land. This one comes off a "dynamite" (Phil's word) Bird Song, and you could tell they were having a blast rippin' through it.
Morning Dew
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

They fix some tuning problems mid-way through and then just turn on the heat. What a way to open a show!
Bird Song
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

Brilliant soundscapes throughout, with Bobby nice and audible in the mix (soundboard, not the DP). Jerry makes bird sounds and swoops and soars over and above the rolling wind and cloud ocean coming from Phil and Billy. Great great stuff from one of the top eras of this beautiful song.
