China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Sept. 20, 1973
The Spectrum

Solid smooth jamming on China Cat for a solid, beautiful 8 mins, including the FGJ. Rider has Phil high in the vocal mix, to a very nice effect.

Builds and builds and builds, faster hotter faster and hotter. The crowd goes wild (stage antics?) Something special was in the wind.

Who's playing the Theremin? There's definitely something odd going on here. Was Ned Lagin sitting in?

Slower tempo gives this one a special feel. Jerry sings it with great gusto and a deeper bluesier feel then others. The whole ride is great fun.

Saturday Night Live

The band is having fun with it on live TV, even though squeezed into under 4 minutes: http://vimeo.com/35129207. Bobby slides over the disco beat.

Totally wrong year. Sorry folks, I'm listening to something else. Jeez, a little spaced out here....
The Other One
Sept. 9, 1972
Hollywood Palladium

"Strong" is an understatement. This one is an epic journey. It starts as a juggernaut, with twelve minutes or so a powerhouse tight ensemble jam before the first verse, and then it gets weird and freaky before smoothing out into a one-of-a-kind experiment in melodicism before swooping back around in orbit and burning up on re-entry. Should be much higher.
Playin' In The Band

Iowa State Fairgrounds

Truly beautiful. The jam starts off in a different modal mood than others. Phil is just outta sight throughout, and of course Billy's drumming during this whole period is just brilliant. The strange and mellow way they pull themselves out of the aether and re-enter the theme is also a thing of beauty. A great long version here, complete with some cool Lagin weirdness.
Bird Song
Aug. 27, 1972
Old Renaissance Faire Grounds

Hey Deadhead 21: check out the Bird Song from two days earlier. The whole summer is filled with great ones, but I think the 25th outdoes the more famous 27th. Let us know what you think!

Hey drumsspace fan: why not tell us a little bit about why you dig the versions you're posting? There's always room to find some new tasty nugs, or dig into an era out of our comfort zone. You seem to really love the dead and know a thing or two about eras I'm not so familiar with. It would be cool to hear why this or that version gets your vote. Cheers, the Carrion Crow.
