Exactly what I look for in an Eyes. As good as they come.

Ecstatic, exhuberent, exciting. Great end to a great set.

Starts like a rocket, lands on Mars bigtime, then light-speed re-entry to a killer Eyes in under 10 minutes after a balls-out Truckin. Great set.

Massive Phil and Jerry co-soloing in a supersonic mindmeld for 19 minutes. Very special with a raw, almost brutish energy.

Eyes Of The World

Soars on wings a mile long. I always felt that the segue of madness into beauty in Estimated>Eyes is in perfect keeping with the dark into light effects of strong GD medicine. They knew what they were doing, and while they could take you into deep and dangerous places, most often they'd bring you back, altered, maybe even shattered, but reassembled and closer to those who pulled through it together with you. This pair does it for me, even 38 years later....

Utterly killer version here. Jerry's solo before the jam blazes through the madness like a thousand psychic piranhas. '78 is sooooo under-appreciated and this is top-shelf Estimated, certainly - whatever tape speed problems might be out there.

Jeez, the comment I made for the 25th was meant for this one. Sorry guys, here it is... Woof: This is so much jam. This one nails it with a jagged skullfuckin' lightning bolt from a space tower to earth and back again. This has the pulse of The Great Ones that come later in the year, and heard in sequence represents a great booster stage in Playin's evolution. There's something utterly coherent about the jam that - as big a Playin' fan as I am - I can admit is sometimes missing from the half-hour ultrajams from '73 and '74. Great sounding mix, too, which adds a lot, with Bobby and Keith totally clear and well balanced. Thanks Europe!

Sorry! The comment I made here was for the 24th...
Bo Diddley
May 23, 1972
Strand Lyceum

Rare disagreement with cgarces here: This one far-and-away tops the 25 March '72 show with Bo himself. I wish it weren't so, but I've never thought the Bo Diddley show was all that good. It never really gels and has some embarrassing moments in it where you can almost hear the crowd shrugging with indifference. (The exception is when Pigpen comes back on and kicks up holy terror to retake his own back.) This one, however, is tight, muscular and coherent. A great version all around.
