Hurts Me Too
Dec. 27, 1970
Legion Stadium
Pig's vox never sounded better. Pure, fine Blue Ron soul and a rippin' set of solos, but sadly cuts out.

All about the jam. One of the mello raps of the era, and they go off in that way that says "let's do this forever". Why not here?

Friend of the Devil

Legion Stadium
Sweetness in form and execution. Even the feedback from the monitors harmonises nicely. A gentle, delicate version.

King Bee
Dec. 23, 1970
Winterland Arena
Deep blues, two brilliant harp solos, great Jerry work (duh), and a Charlie Miller cleanup. Listen up!

Deep Elem Blues
Dec. 23, 1970

Starts a little funny, but has that rare electric funk quality. On the recent C. Miller cleanup, so thank you sir.

Good Lovin'

Jahrhunderthalle
Pigpen roars, "tighten up" before he jumps in his saddle and rides. And the band tightens up behind him, gets into a groove right underneath that allows him to shine, like the best freaking back-up band of all time.

Bobby throws a little snarl into it , in addition to some great saloon-piano work by Keith, which makes it for me. Hot version.
Dark Star

Rheinhalle
A wild ride from start to finish, including vast passages of spontaneous composition, viscous goo, a nasty bit of confusion-inducing hypertweak, and moments of utter beauty. Cool sandwich too, with the second half of Dark Star being an unbelievably beautiful and cogent piece of spontaneous music. What a treat. I'm going to listen to this one again and again....

This one really highlights where Pig could have been going with the emerging '70s sound had he stayed healthy. This has extended jazz- and fusion-influenced jams. His raps fit within the more melodic explorations, and his voice is just perfect. There are other moments from the tour like this, and they stand out for me on how much he was evolving up to the last.

Relentless danger. This is a brain melter.
