Playin' In The Band
Dec. 11, 1972
Winterland Arena

Expansive and spacious with brilliant flashes. Has a few bad AUD patches in need of a fix but well worth the ride.

Friend of the Devil
Dec. 11, 1972
Winterland Arena

Short and sweet. Not lickety-split quick pickin' à la 1970-71 and certainly not a slow-as-cold-molasses 80's style either, but nice and right. A gem.

Me and Bobby McGee

Unique version. Great vocals with Jerry singing backup. Classic '72 sound.

Good Lovin'

Fillmore East

Back from when this wasn't just a toss-off after Drums/Space. High voltage Pig.

Not mellow. Not spaced-out sweetness, but a burning hot re-entry after a rocketship TOO.

The Wheel
Feb. 26, 1977
Swing Auditorium

Certainly a beautiful little Wheel, but I can't see it as the top of the list: I absolutely dig how it fits inside PITB, which is just sublime on all sides, but I love me some good Wheel and this lovely just doesn't cover enough more ground, so I miss the extended jams and long outros in others of the era. Damned nice sandwich though.

Full of graceful, intense, yet somehow still mellow, jamming - and who but the Dead could put those three together so consistently? The transition to The Wheel is brilliant, especially as it stretches out and you can hear each one joining in one after the other. Definitely one that suffers if you don't have gapless playback. Great choice.
Dancin' in the Streets

Paramount Theatre

First time played with the Godchauxs and it's a doozy.
Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication

Tape speed questions on some versions. I like Hunter Seamons matrix version best, which has great warmth and seems to have corrected some of the speed wobbles appearing in others.
Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Dec. 31, 1971
Winterland Arena

Cuse and Nono got this one right. The whole show is just up-and-jumping, and this NFA>GDTRFB>NFA will get your blood moving.
