He Was A Friend of Mine
June 14, 1969
Monterey Performing Arts Center

So blissful you might just find yourself floating out of time. A beautiful mellow island in a sea of blazing psychedelia. China Cat tease at the end.

Dark Star
Oct. 30, 1968
The Matrix

Rarity w/o Pig or Bobby, but TWO glorious Dark Star jams on this "goof" of a night. Strictly speaking not the Dead, but it's here and its glorious.

Turn On Your Love Light
Oct. 30, 1968
The Matrix

A rarity: No Pig or Bobby & no vocals. Still, beautifully inventive soloing shows why they kept it in rotation for so long. This "goof" is worth it.

Death Don't Have No Mercy

Family Dog at the Great Highway

So much feeling coming off an interstellar DS>StS>11 and then they just put this show to bed with brilliance and feeling.

Dark Star
May 4, 1972
Olympia Theater

Oh man, this goes very far out - not your entry-level Deadhead Dark Star, no sir. But it has everything: deep space, great melodic return, and a beautiful beautiful jam towards the end of the long strange trip. Am I crazy or does Phil sound like he's ready to dive strait into St. Stephen in the build up at the last second à la 1969? Guess 'twas not to be, alas.
Weather Report Suite
Sept. 20, 1974
Palais Des Sports

The Prelude and part one of the Suite are a bit too loose for my tastes, but the Let it Grow on its own is brilliant.
Scarlet Begonias
Sept. 20, 1974
Palais Des Sports

Show gets dissed a bit for reasons that are lost on me. Here I hear them exploring new sounds, new grooves and new ideas on what was still a young song. Very laid back (no idea nor concern whether related to dope) but sublimely inventive and intricate, reaching harmolodic interplay of collective improv at its best.
Caution
Nov. 6, 1970
Capitol Theater

Hvd sleuth is right. Heady as fuck. Give it a spin - or let it give you one. Goddamn, it's a corker.
The Music Never Stopped
May 5, 1977
New Haven Coliseum

Outrageous power. This one pushes against all limits.
