Bobby's warmup after a CRS opener helps kick off one of the best 1st sets of 1976. Part of the brief era when they mic'd and mixed Donna beautifully

Gets right weird as part of a deep PITB sammy. How many first set spacemelts are there in '76? Something in the water for this hometown show???

Looks Like Rain

How these guys (and gal) could turn such a cheese-ball song into massive lift-off spaceship jam event horizon is a modern miracle of music.

Smooth running, out of a very cool, thematically coherent Drums. Beautiful harmonies. Every Wheel is an elegant treat from '76, and this is a beaut.

On of the post-haitus ones that stretch and groove and go every-which-way. What a treat.

Caution
Jan. 8, 1966
Fillmore Auditorium

Rippin' and trippin'. It's messy, wild and reckless.... with an edge-of-chaos intensity that can still blow your mind almost 54 years later. ^^Very cool note there about a possible influence on Tom Waits. No doubt about it, he surely heard the Dead in California in their early years. Cool association.
Can't Come Down

Bob Dylan's influence on the Dead is evident from the lyrics and delivery of this oldest of the old demos. Harmonica, snarling vocals, proto-punk social commentary of the Highway 61-era. Anyone out there think they started listening to Dylan in the 90s???
Uncle John's Band

The first one in over two years, covering both the hiatus and all of '76. They sound just a wee bit tuckered out in the first moments (this being at leat 4 full hours of music into the night) but they rock the ever-lovin' shit out of it by the end in a 'here comes '77' way that jut slays me.

Phil's running counterpoint to Jerry throughout the long jam is a masterclass on its own. Love the deconstruction of the outro theme before the finally land on it and come together like presto! hop! magic. As much as I loved Scarlet>Fire, I treasure the solo Scarlets too.
