Scarlet Begonias
May 19, 1974
Portland Memorial Coliseum

Short succint and distilled to its '74 essence. Plus Donna's sexiest "Ohhhhhhhhh" ever.

Brokedown Palace
Dec. 2, 1971
Boston Music Hall

Sweet as honey. Holds together in perfect harmony and never drags.

Playin' In The Band
Dec. 2, 1971
Boston Music Hall

Pushes against the melody: Late '71 and the song's potential is about to burst free in the months ahead. You can feel it, and it's good.

Ship of Fools
May 17, 1974
P.N.E. Coliseum

For any SoF doubters out there, this one is as convincing as they come. Everything comes together nicely, and there isn't a single downer on deck.

Loose Lucy

Faster than most. And mad funky.

Bird Song
April 29, 1971
Fillmore East

Played a full step lower than in later years.
Hard to Handle
April 29, 1971
Fillmore East

Jerry soloing behind Pig's lead here (and elsewhere) is too hot. Get's the sap running.
Sugaree
Oct. 17, 1983
Olympic Center

This is a perfect version: Energetic, but not cokey, clear vocals, and soaring, driven, take-control solos. I'll take this ride anytime.
Turn On Your Love Light
Aug. 6, 1971
Hollywood Palladium

Great vintage dead. Everyone was on for the show and Pig was blazing from beginning to end. Think I'll (a year later) add that around 18:00 they get into some very cool melodic inventions. Nice nice nice.
El Paso
Aug. 6, 1971
Hollywood Palladium

Would love to hear it, but the versions of this date on the Archive with El Paso seem to be DPs, not-for-streaming. Any ideas why the different songlists for this great date?
