Captures all that's great about this song. Uplifting, joyful, smile-inducing. Can't believe this one's not here yet.

Playin' In The Band
March 26, 1973
Baltimore Civic Center

Propulsive and moody. Melodic developments developed over 20 minutes of energetic jamming. Billy and Phil are driving throughout.

Playin' In The Band

The Spectrum

Expansive, exploritory, and spaced out in places, a nice ride and another great from Spring '73.

Smokestack Lightnin'
Nov. 19, 1966
Fillmore Auditorium

Jerry's metallic tone and Bobby's angular hard-swiping slasher effect turn the jam into a wild industrial ride. Pigpen is of course in perfect form. All in all it's hard to believe this is '66. Good ol' Grateful Dead indeed - with a biting hard edge that shows how they could already turn on a dime from peaceful hippies into a dangerous menacing force at this stage.
The Same Thing
Nov. 19, 1966
Fillmore Auditorium

Outrageous jam on this early gem. Pigpen's voice is perfect and the band goes bananas behind him.
Cream Puff War
Nov. 19, 1966
Fillmore Auditorium

Starts a little rougher, but turns into a solid-fuel rocket and blasts off in a truly inspired jam.
Wharf Rat
June 20, 1983
Merriweather Post Pavilion

Y'all got me: This is magic. Just how dialled in do you have to be to meet lighting bolts with thunder? Go Phil go...
The Same Thing
Sept. 16, 1966
Avalon Ballroom

Deep and dark. Wonderful, mysterious and powerful.
