China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 23, 1972
Strand Lyceum

A more rocking version than others from the time, and oddly overlooked. Jumps off Cat right away into the long transition. Energetic stuff here.

Black Throated Wind
May 23, 1972
Strand Lyceum

Is there a single one from '72 that doesn't end in triumph? This song just got better and better throughout Europe. Surprised this wasn't here yet.

Sugar Magnolia
May 13, 1972
Lille Fairgrounds

Perfect musical sunshine. This one even got my not-at-all-into-the-Dead wife to dance around like a trippin' hippy, so you know it's good.

Truckin'
May 13, 1972
Lille Fairgrounds

Unforgivable that you guys overlook Truckin'. There's a reason it's the one song non-heads know. This one is a forgotten colossus. Listen up.

Mister Charlie
May 13, 1972
Lille Fairgrounds

Distinctly slower, with a greasier funk vibe. Surprised it isn't here. Different from the others and lots of fun.

Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication
Sept. 27, 1976
Community War Memorial Auditorium

You know how when old head's talk about '76 and mention the great LL>Sup jams? Well here it is. This kicks off and just doesn't stop. The whole show features one of the greatest 2nd sets of all time, and this one shows you earlier on in the show just how ready they were to go further and farther faster.
They Love Each Other
Sept. 27, 1976
Community War Memorial Auditorium

One of the best from '76, with just a touch of insouciant strut.
Not Fade Away
Sept. 25, 1976
Capital Centre

NFA can be so sweet when they dial it down. Here the voices are full of feeling, and it really feels like the big love.
Scarlet Begonias
Sept. 25, 1976
Capital Centre

Starts really muscular for a SB, just pumped full of vitamins and bursting at the seams with an almost ska or Caribbean carnival vibe to it. Once the melody is done they turn the heat down but she's still simmering away. The explorations begin and it's a great great ride. At one point Phil and Jerry are in spontaneous counterpoint. I love the stand-alones and this one is top shelf.
Cosmic Charlie
Sept. 25, 1976
Capital Centre

We used to hold signs and wear teeshirts calling for Cosmic Charlie. There was even some acid inspired shenanigans calling it a "campaign" or something. Never came back, though did it. It's just one of the mysteries.
