Not Fade Away
July 25, 1972
Paramount Theater
For a show that sometimes lacks a little energy in places, they end it with quite a bang. This outro is exceptionally good.

Truckin'
July 22, 1972
Paramount Northwest Theatre
Slow star builds up huge head of steam and a slamin' jam. Ends funny, unsure whether >He's Gone or something else. Nice version, overlooked show.

Not too polished yet, but full of that new-song exhuberence. Great key work from Keith, and a funforall Reeeee-o Grand outro.

Playin' In The Band

A thing of (overlooked) beauty. Tight, muscular and coherent. It never drags. A perfect '72 Playin' here.

Crazy Fingers
Feb. 28, 1975
Bob Weir's Studio
You've never heard it like this: Rehearsal tape, listed as "Distorto". Track 2. An absolute treasure. Hard-freaking-core. No words, just rock.

Beautiful version full of sparkle and joy, Keith and Jerry in the outro are just glorious. Nice to hear Bobby so clearly on the DP version.
Let It Grow

I wouldn't call this "chill" by any standard, other than maybe the ultra-cokey early '80s versions. This is speedy and even sounds rushed to me. Check out any LIG from before the hiatus, or even after '86 for chill.
Pretty Peggy O
Sept. 25, 1976
Capital Centre
Trust me: Choose the Dick's Picks version, over the Archive: It's more in tune, the tape speed doesn't wobble, and there's no cut. Aside from that, this is a picture-perfect version of Peggy-O: Jerry is emotive but not mawkish, and the band moves with oomph and purpose.
Mama Tried

I agree too! Most under-appreciated year of the 70s, for sure. I think it's because it doesn't have that shiny polish that '77 has, and doesn't have the pre-hiatus wildness. That said, it's an experimental (though not necessarily 'outer-spheres weirdness' experimental) profoundly musical and virtuoso year. This is a great version of a beautiful tune.

This song brings so much beauty to the world. I fully agree with you, brother. Gentle poetry, and Jerry shredding. What more could you ask for?
