China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Fillmore West

Short Cat, but very interesting transition, with Bobby driving in all his angular beauty, followed by a tight jamming Rider.

Want to here the '70 sound, the closeness, the transition from psychedlicore to country to arena rock? Here it is in all its chaotic beauty.

Cold Rain and Snow

Fillmore West

Like everything from this epic heady show, the boys are just exactly perfect. The vocals are so on. Jerry sounds great.

New Speedway Boogie
June 5, 1970
Fillmore West

With the exception of the unfortunate tape flip, this is a pristine acoustic version. Jerry has the vox of an angel here.

Friend of the Devil

Pure and perfect. Fans of '70 will already love it. Those discovering the acoustic Dead, here it is. Wow.

Truckin'

Almost unlistenable tape speed problems, and I'll listen to absolutely everything. Sounds like the batteries were dying, with all the slowing down and speeding up. That said, the unique jam afterwards doesn't seem to have the same problem, and is interesting, driven, and wondrously beautiful.

Beautiful description, Nonoyolker. Couldn't say it better myself.
The Other One

Unthinkably underrated heads. Get into it. Starts out a bit loose, but around the 10 minute mark tips into enormous territory. Check it out. Special shout out for Billy who, following a solo with just Phil, drives this one with liquid ferocity.

Jerry brings in that steam-whistle twang and kicks this version up nicely.
Bird Song
Dec. 12, 1972
Winterland Arena

If you find yourself somehow soaring through time, gently banking to and fro on the slight twitch and lift of the wings of a wandering bird, passing over swirling clouds and gazing down on the beautiful land and the glorious sun as it descends into the sea, don't worry and have no fear: It's just the song in all its magic, in all its beauty, and the finest band in the land, just doing what they do.
