Candyman
Feb. 18, 1971
Capitol Theater
Beautiful harmonies and country soul. Brilliant and historically important show.

Playin' In The Band
Feb. 18, 1971
Capitol Theater
First performance ever and it's slower, but beautiful and raw. Bobby sings like a country warbler typical of the '71s. Historically interesting.

Greatest Story Ever Told
Feb. 18, 1971
Capitol Theater
Primordial version, first time played, introduced as "Mickey wants to call this one 'The Pump Man' for reasons of his own." Raw and unlike any other.

Loser
Feb. 18, 1971
Capitol Theater
First Loser ever and the last Mickey show before his break. Brilliant version, hot energetic vocals and that good '71 sound.

Hurts Me Too
Feb. 18, 1971
Capitol Theater
Dripping with deep-soul. Pigpen's voice at its best. Sounds like honey.

Rip-snortin' kick off. High energy right out of the gate.
Sitting on Top of the World

Strand Lyceum
Final version ever, according to setlists.net, and the absolutely nailed it. I always wondered why this up-and-jumper got culled from the repertoire. It's up there with the most emblematic sounds from their early period, but there it is... out with a bang at the end of Europe '72.
Comes A Time

Yeah... that organ is beautiful. I suppose that's Pigpen, not Keith. Something about the chordplay has his fingerprints on it. Does anyone know more about this?
Dark Star

I don't want to be pedantic or anything, but the comments above spread a confusion: This is definitely a "Feelin' Groovy" jam, and not a MLB. There's a good essay about this, with some pretty comprehensive lists of all the early name-brand jams over at deadessays.blogspot . Either way, this one always slays me. What a piece of music!
Truckin'
July 16, 1972
Dillon Stadium
The set starts a bit shaky, but this jam goes on to deliver the goods. Nice one, even if they start off a bit loose. Plus it's a master class for any bass players out there on how to comp it and stomp it: Phil is a monster all over this, and high in the mix.
