Dark Star
June 24, 1973
Memorial Coliseum

Subtle(!) melodic inventiveness, slow boil for 27 minutes, nice channel separation between Bob and Jerry, Phil solo. A forgotten Dark Star.

Very hot energy and great soloing, plus it goes into an epic Dark Star. Forgotten concert: But the boys hotted this one up big time.

Short and sweet with lots of character. This show has mix / sound issues, but is quite worth the listen.

Listen past some sound quality problems for a sweet, thoughtful version - especially the outro.

The boys ripped out some shit-kickin' high energy shredding on this one.

Around and Around
Nov. 20, 1970
The Palestra, U. of Rochester

Continues a brilliant combination of jams and tunes with Jorma that has the "nice heady acid cowboys vibe" that Glynparson identifies. A great and sprawling set of music between old friends here. The jams aren't really Around and Around, but this is the only place to say it without "Jam" as a category on its own.

Compare this jam to the ones on November 20th (nine days later) with Jorma Kaukonen from Jefferson Airplane. You can hear the difference immediately. Even if they hadn't rehearsed together as such, you can feel that the communication between them just works better than this one here.

Kickingly good fun, with that little extra oomph from Jorma. A good-times rarity at the time.

Very smooth and interesting jam starting around 13:00. Doubtful song order. Does anyone have the correct setlist?

One of the only times I've ever come close to turning it off, the sound is so bad. Listen if you're a completist freak like me only: Tape speed, warble, static, fuzz, it's a D-. Plus it's a long bluesrock jam with guest stars that might have seemed really exciting at the time, but is the kind of "common denominator" jam that musicians play when they haven't rehearsed together. Lotsa love to the grinning pirate who snuck in their recorder, but overall, meh.
