Greatest Story Ever Told
Feb. 23, 1974
Winterland Arena
Electrifying and high-power jams, with some of the weirdest sounds Donna ever made. Great fun and a wild ride.

Surf Punk! Never thought I'd hear California surfer thrash so clearly in the Dead, but here it is: Bobby as primordial punk rocker? Why not?

Are you kidding me? This is just blazingly good. Jerry's on fire, vocals and axe. Too good for words.

Solid and sweet, with some beautiful slide solos and nice vocals, Donna included.

A powerful triumph, just exploding with intense jamming and emotion. Real dynamite here.

Turn On Your Love Light
Aug. 15, 1971
Berkeley Community Theater
Right about the 10 minute mark this goes into some deep funk straight out of the era: Buddy Miles-ish type stuff. The funk influence on the Dead can be overlooked, but it's certainly there. Plus for a few short seconds right at the end it sounds like they almost went into a Caution jam. Hot stuff.
The Other One

The boys are in perfect form here. TOO's with Phil high in the mix have that added intensity, and the whole saga: Trucking>TOO>MAMU>TOO>Wharf Rat is just full-force Philzone madness. Beautiful spaced-out jam in the middle too. Great recording allows us to hear every piece separately, with the rare fine Bobby jam segment before MAMU particularly nice.

Hot damn, its lickety-split and turns on dime after dime. What a fun song this must be to play so well.

Wow. This one goes everywhere. Prepare yourself to be blown into individual atoms, then reassembled from the electromagnetic cloud into a slightly older, wiser, and maybe just a little freaked-out version of your "self". Not a first-time-dosing kinda version, okay? You've been warned, now go at it. Oh, and as stated above, the jam is full of wonderful beauties. Enjoy.

Great pure version, as good as they come. A lot of subtlety to Jer's voice here and throughout the show.
