He Was A Friend of Mine
June 14, 1969
Monterey Performing Arts Center

So blissful you might just find yourself floating out of time. A beautiful mellow island in a sea of blazing psychedelia. China Cat tease at the end.

Dark Star
Oct. 30, 1968
The Matrix

Rarity w/o Pig or Bobby, but TWO glorious Dark Star jams on this "goof" of a night. Strictly speaking not the Dead, but it's here and its glorious.

Turn On Your Love Light
Oct. 30, 1968
The Matrix

A rarity: No Pig or Bobby & no vocals. Still, beautifully inventive soloing shows why they kept it in rotation for so long. This "goof" is worth it.

Death Don't Have No Mercy

Family Dog at the Great Highway

So much feeling coming off an interstellar DS>StS>11 and then they just put this show to bed with brilliance and feeling.

Eyes Of The World
June 9, 1976
Boston Music Hall

Any doubt at the time that Mickey coming back was for the good must have quickly evaporated. The Devils just kill it here with their incredible energy and groupmind. Great solos, my favorite Eyes from '76.
Crazy Fingers
July 13, 1976
Orpheum Theatre

Comes up from the side and pulls you out of your body up somewhere near those cloud hands he's singing about. One of the Dead's greatest compositions played here to beautiful effect.
Playin' In The Band
Feb. 24, 1974
Winterland Arena

Magnificent musicality throughout. Jerry and Keith at about 11:00 go into some wild modal extraterritoriality. It does exactly what I loved about PITB as a 1st set closer, transforming the show from a set of (great) songs into the long, the strange, and the beautiful.
Candyman
Feb. 24, 1974
Winterland Arena

Really really beautiful. Who's that on the smokey backup vocals?
Terrapin Station
May 17, 1977
Memorial Coliseum

Matter of taste, but this one never fully lifts off for me. Much prefer 22 Jan. '78 for serious face meltage.
