Playin' In The Band
Dec. 19, 1973
Curtis Hixon Convention Hall

Really Heads? Not here yet? 21 minutes of super fine hotandheady jam. Blazing hot, capping off a year of just outrageous Playin' playing.

Don't know the '70s versions enough to say "unique", but check this one out for beeeautiful vocals over light-as-light sweet acoustic playing.

The boys start the show with all guns blazing. Seems like they'd open with this when they were most massive. Ahhhh, Winterland.

The band has come together, the vocals are warm, the solos are sharp, so strap on boys and girls 'cause this show just ignites from here on out....

Caution

Great Caution, but absofreakinglutely outrageous feedback into the deep deep space and back. Face stolen, body floating -> Bid You Goodnight. Damn.

Dancin' in the Streets
Dec. 1, 1966
Studio demo

Jerry's tone and ideas - he chordal jamming as opposed to his single-note lines - remind me of the work that he did with Jefferson Airplane at right about this time while recording Surrealistic Pillow. Plus, and it's a big plus, this jam goes into a whole different place from the others of the time. For a bit it's a whirling Dervish or Algerian Nouba sound before Bobby cuts back in with the vocals, then a four-on-the-floor outro. Great stuff.

Definitely shows the progress they were making towards the Anthem era of deep deep psychedelic group-mind.

The dates may be dubious, but the playing isn't. This rocks. Check out Phil throwing bombs, way back in '66.
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl

The Matrix

Pretty much a pimp anthem at this point. This one is dirty... and an amazing statement from '66 about where they'd go with Pig in the lead for the next five years.

The Matrix

Ultra-rarity and so much fun. What a treat.
