Wharf Rat

3rd ever and it's a beauty. Show uneven at first, then comes together with Cryptical>TOO>Wharf for some righteous Dead, looking for their '71 sound.

Cumberland Blues

Along with every other bit of this concert, raging good time energy and virtuouso groupmind, aided of course by one of the most ultimate AUDs ever.

Stop everything you're doing and listen to this now. No really, do it. Now.

Playin' In The Band

Something happens to Playing' in Europe. Check 'em out, one by one and watch it grow. This one is the bomb. Outrageous shredding.

Big River
Feb. 22, 1974
Winterland Arena

Listen to this, then listen again for Jerry's solo: Come back and tell me Big River is a "throw away" song, cause he damn-well tears it up here.

Thanks Darkstar67, you can alwaysI trust a Miller source. I'm giving this set another day's listening. This has got to be one of the best hidden 'off the beaten path' extended 2nd set jams ever, with over an hour from Playin' all the way to Around and Around continuous.

Much more powerful on the vocals than many of the others around this time. They really belt it out as an ensemble and it's brilliant. The whole 2nd set is jaw-dropping.

Just sublime. An absolute punch-up beeyute of a standalone Scarlet. I know this is sacrilege to some of you, but I really appreciate the standalones before Scarlett was ankle-chained forever to FTM. Now I love those too, don't get me wrong, but finding SB as a set-closer (this one), or somewhere between others songs in a long jam (check her out on 15 June 1976 in between Sugar Mag and SSDD) gave it a lot of freedom that somehow got lost later on. Just sayin'.

Really should be higher. This has a strong pulse, sweet soloing, and a powerful rocking feel.

You can hear them develop a new sound for this song on both this one and the version from the 14th. There's no other way to describe it, but it's the first real indication to my ear of where they'd be by the beginning of '77, more crisp, more clean, and much more polished.
