Part of a great first set, the band is on fire, and Pigpen in great form. Tight rocker.

Cracklin' and snappy version. The band is über tight and having fun.

Greatest Story Ever Told

Bobby blows a gasket on this one. Raw and powerful, showing exactly where they were headed before Europe. High energy rocker.

Playin' In The Band

I'd argue this was the first Playin' as we came to know it after the end of the "Main Ten" and "country warbler" versions from '71.

After a pretty sloppy 1st set, they charge up and nail this one. Phil goes bananas on the out chorus.

Almost unlistenable tape speed problems, and I'll listen to absolutely everything. Sounds like the batteries were dying, with all the slowing down and speeding up. That said, the unique jam afterwards doesn't seem to have the same problem, and is interesting, driven, and wondrously beautiful.

Beautiful description, Nonoyolker. Couldn't say it better myself.

Unthinkably underrated heads. Get into it. Starts out a bit loose, but around the 10 minute mark tips into enormous territory. Check it out. Special shout out for Billy who, following a solo with just Phil, drives this one with liquid ferocity.

Jerry brings in that steam-whistle twang and kicks this version up nicely.
Bird Song
Dec. 12, 1972
Winterland Arena

If you find yourself somehow soaring through time, gently banking to and fro on the slight twitch and lift of the wings of a wandering bird, passing over swirling clouds and gazing down on the beautiful land and the glorious sun as it descends into the sea, don't worry and have no fear: It's just the song in all its magic, in all its beauty, and the finest band in the land, just doing what they do.
