The steel guitar, which I assume Jerry is playing, really helps to make this early version a good one.

Dark Star
May 25, 1972
Strand Lyceum
Billy takes charge. After the first verse he lays down a rhythm that Phil locks into, then Keith, then Jerry starts down an adventurous path leading to some sonic magic. This is a very strong version, even by 72 standards.
Wharf Rat
May 25, 1972
Strand Lyceum
Jerry really delivers the lyrics of this very moving song. I wish they had added the harmonies during the bridge that Bobby and Donna added later, then perfected by Brent and Bobby. But this is still an outstanding version.
The Same Thing

Fillmore Auditorium
If you want to know why Pig Pen was so valuable to the band, listen to 66!
Cream Puff War
July 29, 1966
P.N.E. Garden Auditorium
This as good, or better then any version of this song that I've heard. Tight, energetic and you can hear everybody on this recording. Jerry tearing up that red Guild!
The Eleven
March 28, 1969
Student Center
Their on to Grad School. Contemplative, at first, then they jump into it. Jerry's giving that SG a work out. Then at about 12 minutes in, they soften it up, then go out strong.
