Saint of Circumstance

Radio City Music Hall

This should be on here if not for any other reason than Jerry doesn't F up the spacey chords after any of the choruses. WOO HOO!!!! :)

Definitely a sleeper gem. Just exactly perfect. Vocals, groove, execution... They all come together here!

Mama Tried

So damn funky; killer groove. I'm a stickler for vocals, and Bob sings this one beautifully. High energy '77 version.

Deal

St. Paul Civic Center Arena

5/11/77 > 5/8/77 IMHO. Execution is near-perfect. If you like Cornell, check this one out from only three days later and compare.

Stella Blue

Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena

Cliche to say "I can't believe this isn't on here," but I'm sayin' it! It's perfectly and beautifully executed. The definitive '73 version.

best '77 version! so funky and right in the pocket.
Looks Like Rain
May 13, 1977
Auditorium Theatre

well said, nonyolker. I recently made a compilation of my 100 favorite Dead performances. Of course I needed to include a LLRain, and I had it down to 5/13 and 5/19. It was a real hard choice, but I ultimately decided on 5/13 because I thought the vocals were a little more solid. It was very hard to choose, though!
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
April 23, 1977
Springfield Civic Center

I just listened to it again... Still my favorite! I think I gravitate towards this one because I'm not a fan of super-long Fires. This combo is all about the groove for me, and this one is right in the pocket. We get a couple growls out of Jerry too, which is always great to hear.
Dark Star
Dec. 6, 1973
Public Hall

This one sometimes gets ripped on because it's TOO long, but I find it worth every second. My favorite '73 Dark Star, hands down.
Greatest Story Ever Told
May 3, 1972
Olympia Theater

This version needs WAY more love. Easily should be in the top 3...
