This is killer stuff. Phil's tone grabbed me from the beginning, and he and Billy are MVPs of this version. I can't tell if it's quite a Sly reference or not, but both passages have similarities (rhythmically, bouncing around an octave/minor pentatonic type riff).
And hell yes to Buddy Miles! I love the stuff with Band of Gypsies more than Hendrix's stuff with the Experience in a lot of ways, mostly because Miles would just lay down these *fat* grooves and let Hendrix shred atop them.
