Overall this show isn't a standout, but I love me some nice space. Also dig the "Dark Star" teases at the end!

Worth it to hear what Bobby does to sweet Jane... you'll know it when you hear it. Worth a giggle.

Jerry plays some nice angular lines (ex. first solo), and this features a decent vocal performance.

Everything from this night is well above average. And listen to Keith!

Why did this drop out of the May lineup as a second set jam vehicle? It can't be because of bad performances, since this Palladium run has two good ones. Overall on this tour: 8 first set versions; 2 second set (early in set), but none after this night. Wish they'd stuck with it, since these two second set "Sugarees" from this tour are both very solid.

I don't know enough to weigh in on the larger issue, but this one has a vote from me. nice and slow, with those great May leads. Some very good playing from all involved here. I'd also like to add that I think this first set is structured quite well (three fast tunes, three slows ones, then picks back up), unlike some of the more schizophrenic song orders, and that helps give this show a boost over some of its neighbors from this run.

There's a different groove in the beginning of this that I've not heard in the other May versions (Phil omits the move to the lower root, and Bobby floats along accompanying him?). Slight misstep with words before solo. Jerry deep in pocket, and trying out some new ideas. Doesn't really go anywhere for such an extended solo, but he plays fluidly and compellingly.

Also fun interplay between drummers and crowd. Crowd's clapping gets ahead of band and falls apart, then regroups as the drummers move to that tempo and the whole group stomps as one. Nifty stuff.

Listen to the transition. Smooth as silk, and I've never heard anything quite like it.
