Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo

A searingly hot version, even by '77 standards. The rhythm section has a strong head of steam and Jerry unleashes a blizzard of little melodic phrases and harmonic inventions - almost too fast at times. This version won't displace the immaculate 5/7 but I think it's actually stronger than 9/3.

This is superior to 11/6/77; Jerry's leads have a more precise, crystalline quality and the rhythm section is tighter. Both 11/5 and 11/6 have huge closing jams and you could reasonably prefer either one, but the 11/5 jam before the Rio Grande verse is, to my ears, more thrilling and better executed. This Half-Step was new to me and quite a pleasant surprise!

In this early version, you can hear the band working to sort out all the sections of this song. It's not fully developed, but Jerry finds some creative space in the final jam section to do a little shredding. I wish they had busted this out at Veneta on the 27th!

A well-developed early version featuring a lovely thematic jam (at about 9:00) in the middle of the final instrumental section. Quite a special Half-Step!

Real sleeper here - starts out deceptively smooth, but the long wind-up pays off in spades with a triumphant climax. Eleven thumbs up
