St. Stephen

I've never heard them keep this song on such a tight leash. Vocally, musically, this hits the bulleye. Seriously, what the hell is it doing down here??
The Other One

Shrine Auditorium

What in god's name is this doing so far down the list?? The clarity and purpose in the singing and playing make this an outstanding candidate for the definitive O1. It's a perfect union of steel-eyed focus and wild abandon!
Comes A Time

Strand Lyceum

This should be much, much higher. Crystalline perfection.
Ship of Fools

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

This is the best version I've heard, and it should be streets ahead of the current #1 (Jai-Alai Fronton). Jerry normally plays this with a quiet, mournful tone, vocally and musically, but here there's a strong undercurrent of anguish and desperation - even a touch of anger. It adds a whole new dimension to the lyrics, and really elevates the song.
Caution

Fillmore East

Thank you psychranger! I've waited years to hear a decent recording of this, and I'm so *grateful* that moment is finally here. So, how good is this version? Well, it definitely doesn't have the unparalleled energy of 11/10/67 - this is a more leisurely, exploratory take on a song that, for me, hits its peak as a raging beast. Also, there are some tentative moments here, and Pig doesn't really cut loose at any point. For these reasons, I can confidently say 11/10/67 is the best Caution by a pretty wide margin. This is an interesting version, but it can't compete for the top spot. Why 4/8/72 is still #1 I have no idea - Caution was a spent force by then, and the '72 recordings are way too "clean" for a dirty animal like this!
