China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Nov. 15, 1969
Lanai Theater

Bouncy as it is lysergic. Unique phrasing from Jerry. Everybody’s vocals are on. The Rider is some pure country fried jamming if I’ve ever heard it.

This is The Dead at peak performance level. Cataclysmic version. Everyone is ON. Explorative and not a beat missed. Easily top 5 of 69.

Nice early electric version. Always preferred this key for Dire Wolf compared to when they changed it in the later years. Just right. Nice version.

Next Time You See Me

Takes you right to Chicago. Jerry’s playing emulates the blues greats. Hard rocking version that reminds me of a Junior Wells cut. Highly recommend.

Haunting organ playing. Crystalline and psychedelic early version that feels very spacey. Great vocal delivery.

The Other One
Oct. 22, 1971
Auditorium Theatre

Powerful. Keith’s abilities are put on full display and are even put through the test through this heralding adventure. A stunning early version with a great Cryptical no less. The blueprint for later 72 versions and beyond, I love how egoless Jerry’s playing is here, Keith is the player Jerry really needed to explore further into the deep dark and highest of lights in music. This is a fine example of how Keith opened Jerry up. Lovely version. Also Phil is just murdering the bass in this version. ALSO THAT TRANSITION INTO DEAL? Real deal dead here ladies and gentleman. Make sure to pick your brain up off the floor after this.
Morning Dew
Jan. 3, 1970
Fillmore East

Dew openers are a portal into something deep. This is no exception. Super psychedelic with a beautiful marching drum sound all throughout. Sets the tone for the entire show. Pure Armageddon fire and brimstone primal jamming. Deserves way more love.

Dancin' in the Streets
May 8, 1977
Barton Hall - Cornell University

I remember going on a trip to Dallas and as I was getting picked up, this was the first song I heard in the car. Afterwards they fired up Dark Star>El Paso 8/27/72. To this day, this Dancin’ has a special place in my heart because it was one of those jams that opened up my eyes to what the Dead could really do. Happy anniversary Cornell
