Sugaree
Sept. 26, 1980
Warfield Theater

The oft-overlooked electric sets from the Warfield/Radio City acoustic runs. '77 be damned, THIS is a Sugaree.

Good Lovin'

Pine Knob Music Theater

Bobby making sure this show doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Great ad-libs, and the full howling range we love.

Sugar Magnolia
Aug. 21, 1980
Uptown Theatre

Whole show is a hidden classic- but whatever you do DO NOT skip this Sugar Mags. Truly seamless after the set break, Dead at their finest.

That dawg is howling, and by gawd tnat rooster be prowlin.

Me and My Uncle

The Spectrum

Jerry manages to fit even more extra notes in, despite this being a way uptempo cut. Maybe the most seamless trans into Big River.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 14, 1993
Sam Boyd Silver Bowl

I think this is the first time I've heard Bruce & Vince...or at least payed attention. Ain't nobody sitting still on this one. Jerry's running out of breath chugging up that mountain, but no rest for the wicket.

Gliding. Sharpest knife in the softest butter.
New Minglewood Blues
Nov. 29, 1980
Alligator Alley Gym, University of Florida

Easy to overlook any single track in a show full of bangers...but this might be the definitive Minglewood. Coming out of '..Know what to do' Jerry clearly is ready to keep ripping on it.
Drums -> Space
Nov. 26, 1980
The Sportatorium

It's worth noting that this short South-East run is exceptionally chipper. Some have speculated the boys ran into a serious snowstorm down in Florida and are bringing Tony Montana vibes to the stage. I think it's more to do with these being the first gigs back on the road after lengthy residency's at Warfield and Radio City. While those shows are legendary and bring us some of serious definitive cuts of many songs...overall they feel quite stiff and uninspired. The obligation to play a pre-determined set, cameras rolling, and a rather 'exclusive' crowd made for weird vibes, and this is the first show back to doing what the Dead does best....suck and fuck.

This entire second set is a near perfect set-list in my mind...and they really deliver performance-wise. The great FLA Snowstorm of November 1980 begins.
