Kings Beach Bowl

RAGING. 'nuff said. Goes into 'Drums', then 'Alligator', and can be found on 'Dick's Picks Vol. 22'.

Jahrhunderthalle

C'mon, this is SURELY the definitive version?! Pigpen is so strong yet so poignantly vulnerable in this cut, with perfect fills from Jerry and Bill.

Morning Dew

Shrine Auditorium

Intense stuff; brisk but heartfelt. Real acid rock. The venue people cut off the power at the end, but 'til then, it's still 7 great minutes.

Turn On Your Love Light
Jan. 26, 1969
Avalon Ballroom

I know Deadheads try to prove themselves by choosing more obscure versions, but the 'Live/Dead' version is EASILY in the Top 5 'Love Lights' ever.

Eyes Of The World

The Sportatorium

A fantastic version, but suffers from recording problems after the song really gets going. A shame -- I think the beautifully recorded 09/03 show retains its edge.
Tennessee Jed
Feb. 26, 1973
Pershing Municipal Auditorium

It isn't just Phil's vocals that're on point -- Jerry's voice is bursting with sly exuberance. One of the best vocal deliveries of this song, plus a superbly bouncy groove, impeccable band work and really excellent guitar breaks towards the end. Whole show was stunningly well recorded, too.
The Wheel
Feb. 3, 1978
Dane County Coliseum

The first minute or so, before the vocals, is gorgeous; the rest is OK, could be a bit fuller and more committed vocally though.
Good Lovin'

Horton Field House - Illinois State University

This is a superb, energetic version -- but noteworthy also because of that face-stealing segue from one of the best FOTMs they ever did -- a FOTM that easily competes with the Barton one.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

This is easily louder and more fiery than Barton, though for me Barton retains the edge for its stateliness and dynamics.
