Turn On Your Love Light
April 27, 1969
Labor Temple

One of two versions on Dick's Picks 26, this one is sh-t hot and one of the upper deck Lovelights. Surprised there aren't more upvotes as this one will turn heads.
Dark Star
April 27, 1969
Labor Temple

A strong 1969 version 2 months after the famous Live/Dead version. A little more extended and stretched out, more rock and slightly less mystical. Has the tougher, distorted guitar of this era and good use of space between the notes and other players. Considering how diluted Dark Star became over time with meandering improvisations this is pretty satisfying.

The Electric Theatre

One of two versions on Dick's Picks Vol. 26. A typically strong Lovelight from '69, just 3 months after the version on Live/Dead, so the performance approach isn't drastically different. Some very hot playing from Jerry that is more recessed in the mix than optimal.

Fillmore East

This was recorded after the famous Avalon version on Live/Dead and before the other Fillmore West tracks that made up the rest of that album. Pretty much in the vein of the Live/Dead version though not as clearly recorded. Probably Pigpen's signature song, Weir's attempts to appropriate it in later years are much less satisfying.

Avalon Ballroom

This is only song on Live/Dead not pulled from the 4 night run at the Fillmore West. A legendary version that pretty much defies criticism, and clearly recorded to boot.
