Jack Straw
Nov. 10, 1973
Winterland Arena
As far as these pre-August 74 versions go, pretty darn good; certainly far better than Veneta

Not the all-time best but surely deserves to be on the list

Sugar Magnolia
April 29, 1972
Musikhalle
Garcia's lead is FURIOUS
Sugaree
April 29, 1972
Musikhalle
I often skip these early ones, but when you pay attention they can be mesmerizing--every instrument plays a unique part, Jerry sings the hell out of it, and Pigpen's organ adds a lot here
Mister Charlie
April 29, 1972
Musikhalle
Incredible. And if you pay attention, I'm not sure Jerry's main lick is the same on any two of these...
The Other One
May 7, 1972
Bickershaw Festival
Gosh, fellers, I don't see how someone could say this tops May 10th!
He's Gone
May 10, 1972
Concertgebouw
I wouldn't say any version prior to 1972-09-09 or subsequent to the hiatus is the 'best ever'! Plus there are overdubs on this unless you've got a two-track version... Pretty nice though
