He's Gone
Nov. 18, 1978
Uptown Theatre

Unique section after the gospel singing. Great transition to TOO

Touch of Grey
Sept. 15, 1982
Capital Centre

The debut, as an encore - raw, lyrics askew, fun times

The Music Never Stopped
Dec. 21, 1978
The Summit

A speedy rendition on a single extant AUD from what is IMO the golden age of TMNS. Good for 77-Feb79, but compares favorably to any MNS thereafter.

Cumberland Blues
Sept. 11, 1981
Greek Theater

This one cooks. It’s the third one since 74, but it’s all so fluid.

Mind Left Body Jam
Sept. 6, 1979
Madison Square Garden

The transition between NFA and Stella is about a minute of MLB. Not the best, but a unique transition and tease for 1979.

Dancin' in the Streets
Oct. 20, 1978
Winterland Arena

I just listened again. This one has it all. It’s not recognizable as dancin for most of the jam. Some will say that this isn’t all dancin, but what else to call it then? There are discrete episodes in the jam, some of which reach some ethereal peaks. The jam ends with a 78-era meltdown that does not have to reach bugs crawling on skin. You can pick on the slide, but that was what he was doing at the time and some of the slide work when he first puts it on is interesting and cool anyway. And what there is of the thematic stuff early is tight (minus Bob missing the very first word of the song). Given the sound quality of the available recordings, this one should be higher up than it is right now.
The Other One
July 19, 1989
Alpine Valley Music Theatre

I'm not a MIDI person, but I thought Jerry's instrument choices fit this short Other One perfectly. I'm not totally into the Healy voice stuff, but this seven minutes of so was a refreshing change of pace for me. And I will visit this one again.
West L.A. Fadeaway
July 19, 1989
Alpine Valley Music Theatre

I'm definitely out of my time period here, but I loved this. The first solo is shredded and the song, which lives or dies on funk, has all that it needs. This Alpine run really was a high-water mark.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
April 9, 1983
Hampton Coliseum

Yes, this is great. I put it on my list earlier this week when I saw your effusive praise and got around to listening yesterday. It was bright sunshine here and hot and I listened on a run. I thought maybe my ear had been biased by that beautiful weather, so I hit it again this morning. The sound quality helps, but the playing is crystal clear too and I really like the end of the China Cat. The whole version is above average for the date. I didn’t touch the rest of the show, which I understand makes some people really unhappy. Not a big fan of Help and Slipknot after 77, so whatever.
Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo
June 9, 1977
Winterland Arena

I think this is the best half step of the spring of 77. That's saying something, I know, but this show is a kind of downhill from here moment. Sure the fall has three half steps that probably beat this one and amazing playing occurs periodically ever after. But this show is the pinnacle of this 3 day winterland stand and it makes a fitting coda of that stand as well as the spring tour of 77 - an era of aesthetic perfection never met so consistently again. And this half step kicks the show off with aplomb.
