Very heady version. Second set has great flow to it. This jam is awesome, and the organ during the verses just elevates the song

Super heady version of this song, melts out of Corrina. Super gorgeous stuff, one of my favourite Jerry ballads

Fast, comes on the heels of a 17 minute Sugaree. Great transition into Big River.

Ripping...leads into a nice Type II jam

Some of the backing vocals sound absolutely ginormous. Tons of energy. Definitely the highlight (along with China-Rider and IMO one of the best Mexicali Blues) from this show that still has a bit of "warmup" feel to it. Good show nevertheless though, still 1974.

China Doll
April 28, 1985
Frost Amphitheatre

Not sure if the jam that comes out of the Playin' reprise (that comes out of China Doll itself) would count as China Doll proper, but that's how it's been cut and tagged on the new Dave's Pick's release (Vol. 49), so I'll leave my thoughts here. The actual China Doll is about as perfect as a mid-80s one can get, with Jerry's well-strained voice. The vocal harmonies are on point, but what makes this version special is that jam following the Playin' reprise. Super heady stuff, very "type II" for the Dead as it doesn't really fall in to either song that precedes it....is Phil teasing something there immediately after the Playin' reprise???
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

Knickerbocker Arena

The first instrumental break in Fire after the verse at around 4 minutes. Intense peak.
