Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
March 31, 1984
Marin County Civic Center

Very interesting version. Chill Scarlet with passionate Jerr vocals, but he ends his solo early, which is odd, cuz it feels like he’s just about to take off. The transition is all-time unique, and the Fire is really one-off + fun stuff. Fascinating + homegrown + comfy-Marin ‘84 Dead.

We get an all-time version in ‘84! Just weeks after 3/31, which portends what we get here, but this is off the charts. Certainly a better Scarlet, with a much more tuned-in Jerr doing his thing + everybody dialed. F*****g awesome + smooth transition. Then the Fire goes completely insane, with everyone going off, including Healy! WHOOOAAA!

Nothing dark at all about this beautiful + tender + sweet version. Pure joy…

Horton Field House - Illinois State University

Absolutely bizarre take from Ernie, in my opinion. The band is reading each other’s thoughts in this, the absolute best version ever, especially Billy and Jerry. 1/31 is second, no doubt, but this is the most focused improvised Jerry solo of his entire life - top of the mountain. Soak it up…
