Big River

An explosive reading of the tune. Maybe Billy had an inkling beforehand and just wanted to be sure ya'll knew it was still a cowboy number.

A very nice 'lush' version nominated in the ongoing attempt to evaluate all of Dick's picks.

Proud and upstanding part of a great sequence. Phil is at the top of his game in one of his greatest of bass-playing years.

This is most notable, I'd say, for the absolutely nuclear bomb that Phil drops during the 'Space' portion. Play it loud on a big rig!

Oh yeah, this thing comes out of a remarkable 'Estimated Prophet'. And you won't find this on the archive. I know a guy who knows a guy who checks it out at stash.nugs.net.

The SBD of the first set of this show is largely unlistenable but by the second set things improve significantly. This version does, however, have a two minute long AUD patch that flanks the first verse--but, beyond that, the sound doesn't get in the way. As with the 'Little Martha' jamming, well, that's my guess as to what it is but it does sound vaguely like something else too. Anyway, there's a lot of cool stuff in this one. Edit: I perhaps overstated the jam here being based on 'Little Martha'. Rather, at around 16:40, or so, Phil takes a short solo and, to my ears, briefly quotes 'Little Martha'. The jam that comes about two minutes later, though, has a decidedly Allmans sound to it.

Stunning! It's probably a lot lower than it should be owing to the fact that it ain't available for streaming on the archive. Some folks, however, have been known to check it out at stash.nugs.net. Great pick!

Primordial electronica. Features some of the usual heaviness (from soundtrack for panic-stricken disorientation to stuff that could practically be in a Peckinpah film) but also moments that could score vintage Sesame Street bits.
