Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Nov. 2, 1977
Field House - Seneca College

No doubt 1977 is a historically monumental year for this pairing- and for good reason. Yet I’ve been shying away from the 1977 couplets lately cuz the transitions to me are too slick and not “thick and gooey”enough…..but this rendering reminded me of 77’s greatness. 100% boss version with Keith helping lead the attack in the segue- the peak hits hard and although the Fire is short, it still satisfies. Most importantly Jerry sounds happy. A wonderful sleeper version worthy of an upvote and further listening.

Have to agree this is not getting the love it deserves. Yes Vince is still feeling out his role, but Jerry’s in total control. A super satisfying rendition.

Recently revisited this version via YouTube. Once upon a time I thought it was a monster, but now I think it’s just ok. I get that it’s early placement may have impacted the “meh” performance. Slightly overrated to my ears. Many better to be heard in ‘78.

Yowza this is the best of 78, which is another way of saying top 5 all time. This version and Cedar Falls are 1 and 1a for the year. Scarlet burns brightly, then the boys follow up with a super heady transition. Fire is a slower boil, but the band brings a ferocious attack. Everyone is on point, playing sharp and aggressive. Must hear!

Although it’s been said many times, many ways......this deserves to be ranked much higher. Transition interplay 10/10. Jerry delivers on Fire. Young Brent manning up. Smile smile smile. Wish they wrapped it up with a little more gusto, but that’s being picky. Listen and upvote now!
