Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication
Sept. 14, 1982
University of Virginia

This Supplication is quite top drawer, I say. What-ho.

This "Happiness is Drumming," (Hart) is proto-Fire, i.e., FOTM (Hart-Hunter) without lyrics.

The Other One

Hartford Civic Center

Already 324 O1s, so let me be clear about this O1. It is unspectacular, but uniquely it ends w/ Garcia playing Bach, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."

This one belongs here too. This is not a stand-alone rendition, but the solo hits a mind-blowing peak. The transition is good too.

Eyes Of The World

Dane County Coliseum

Re: Dick comment. Here is the log of what I listened to: http://rannygazoodead.blogspot.com/2015/05/eyes-of-world-february-1973-july-1976_44.html?m=1 You’ll see that while Justin Bieber does not appear on the list, the 71 versions of Eyes from 73 and 74 do. Almost all of them are - unsurprisingly - better than the first two. I find it silly to suggest that 2/9 and 2/15 belong anywhere near 6/16 and 6/20/74 on this list. But as I am writing these words this morning, this list has 2/9>6/16>2/15>6/20. I’m not saying that Eyes isn’t remarkable for how it emerged into the universe fully formed on February 9, 1973. I am saying that if you listen to all of the versions from 73 and 74, you may reach the conclusion that 2/9 and 2/15 are not even top 25 of the 71 versions played in those two years. But I certainly did not want to hurt your feelings with my silly takes. If this version is a favorite, then have a blast.

And a second slipknot riff comes a night after the first at about 13:30 in this crazy Other One.
Playin' In The Band

Slipknot rises for the first time about 10:15.

This one starts with the final Eyes modal jam and ends by segueing into early FOTM. The modal jam, once such a key element in Eyes, was never played again. The first FOTM with lyrics was still 9 months away.

This site has a nice description of this riff. This was the third time it showed up. http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2010/01/deads-early-thematic-jams.html?m=1 SLIPKNOT JAM Slipknot was just a riff in '74; in the studio in '75 the Dead would work it into the "space-jazz" section of a new suite. So it's interesting to hear the Dead (particularly Garcia) toying with this new riff in some '74 shows, seeing what they could do with it. Also note how far removed it is from the more melodic, accessible jam-riffs they had done in previous years! (Although....the Slipknot riff closely resembles the Seven riff....) http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-02-22.sbd.patched.sirmick.21539.sbeok.shnf (in Playing) http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-02-23.sbd.clugston.3382.sbeok.shnf (in the Other One) http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-20.sbd.clugston.2179.sbeok.shnf (19 minutes into Eyes) http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-07-25.sbd.miller.12656.sbeok.shnf (21 minutes into Dark Star) http://www.archive.org/details/gd1974-10-20.sbd.smith-lee.GEMS.97193.flac16 (14 minutes into Eyes)
