Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication
Sept. 14, 1982
University of Virginia

This Supplication is quite top drawer, I say. What-ho.

Fire On The Mountain

This "Happiness is Drumming," (Hart) is proto-Fire, i.e., FOTM (Hart-Hunter) without lyrics.

The Other One

Already 324 O1s, so let me be clear about this O1. It is unspectacular, but uniquely it ends w/ Garcia playing Bach, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."

This one belongs here too. This is not a stand-alone rendition, but the solo hits a mind-blowing peak. The transition is good too.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
June 18, 1983
Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Tomorrow is the anniversary of this S>F, the success of which, like 10/14/94, relies in part on the audible reaction of the audience. You will feel like you are listening from the parking lot, but wait until Garcia gets the crowd involved during the Scarlet break. At times during the transition and the Fire you may forget that you are listening to an audience recording - I do. The last minute of sound in the Fire is a problem too. But if you like this kind of thing and you're willing to acknowledge that there are a finite number of such things as these anyway... this is a great way to spend tomorrow.

This is number uno. I listened again today for the millionishth time. It still is the best.
Stella Blue

Both solos (but especially the outro) are worth the time it will take to listen. Listen to this excellent AUD for the Althea - stay for this Stella and the China>Rider. The Sugaree too.

When Garcia hits the peak in the solo, you will stop wondering what I mean by the word "peak." It's so good, it overshadows the transition and the fire that follow. (So too an Est.>Eyes pair). The source is an AUD. Finding the SBD of this show would be like walking into Shambhala.
